Job description

Regional Controller

Location: Nashville, TN — Hybrid

Compensation: $150,000 base salary + 15% annual bonus

Reporting to: Chief Financial Officer

About the Opportunity

Our client is a rapidly growing, private equity-backed commercial services platform that provides commercial HVAC services. The organization is in an active growth and acquisition phase. Over the past several years, it has completed multiple strategic acquisitions and expanded into new markets across the Southeast.

To support this continued growth, the company is creating a new Regional Controller position. This is an opportunity for a technically strong, operationally minded accounting leader to work closely with the CFO and finance leadership team while playing a meaningful role in shaping the future accounting infrastructure of a growing, acquisitive platform.

The Role

The Regional Controller will lead regional accounting and financial management activities while serving as a strategic business partner to operational leadership, corporate finance, and executive management.

This individual will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, improving accounting processes, and developing a scalable financial infrastructure capable of supporting continued organic growth and acquisitions.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting expertise, experience operating in a multi-entity or multi-location environment, and the ability to standardize and improve processes across a growing organization. Experience with construction, commercial services, or other trade-based businesses—and particularly percentage-of-completion accounting—is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead regional accounting and financial reporting activities across multiple operating entities and locations.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve and accelerate the month-end close process.
  • Develop processes and reporting to monitor financial performance and analyze key business drivers, trends, and variances.
  • Partner with operational and finance leadership to identify opportunities to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic and operational decision-making.

Accounting, Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company accounting policies, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a technical accounting resource for complex accounting matters and emerging issues.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and support accurate financial reporting.
  • Oversee account reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Coordinate internal and external audit processes and support the implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Partner with corporate finance on tax reporting and other statutory compliance requirements.
  • Support the standardization and consolidation of accounting processes across operating companies.

Leadership & Operational Partnership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a regional accounting team consisting of Accounting Operations Managers, Regional Accounting Managers, Senior Accountants, and Staff Accountants.
  • Build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner closely with regional operational leaders to support business objectives and strategic initiatives.
  • Evaluate existing financial processes, reporting tools, and systems and implement improvements where appropriate.
  • Help establish scalable processes and infrastructure as the organization continues to grow.

Growth, Acquisitions & Integration

  • Support acquisition-related accounting, financial diligence, and integration activities as needed.
  • Help integrate newly acquired businesses into standardized accounting, reporting, and control processes.
  • Partner with finance leadership to improve consistency across multiple entities and operating locations.
  • Support other strategic initiatives and special projects as the company continues to expand.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will bring a combination of strong technical accounting expertise, operational business acumen, and leadership experience.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 8–12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • At least 3–5 years of leadership experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or similar accounting leadership role.
  • Experience overseeing accounting and financial operations in a multi-entity, multi-location, or regional environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit processes.
  • Experience standardizing, consolidating, and improving accounting processes across multiple businesses or locations.
  • Strong financial analysis and business partnership capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop accounting teams.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial reporting skills.
  • Strong project management, organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
  • High level of integrity, sound judgment, and ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • MBA or other advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience with percentage-of-completion accounting strongly preferred.
  • Background in commercial HVAC, mechanical contracting, plumbing, electrical, construction, or other commercial trade/service businesses.
  • Experience with recurring revenue or service-based business models.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed or acquisitive environment.
  • Prior involvement with mergers and acquisitions or the integration of acquired businesses.
  • Experience with Sage or Sage Intacct.
  • Experience with ServiceTitan.

Why This Opportunity

This is a newly created role driven by the company's continued growth and acquisition activity.

The Regional Controller will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the organization rather than simply inherit a fully established accounting function. The role offers meaningful exposure to the CFO and senior leadership team and will play an important role in:

  • Building scalable accounting infrastructure.
  • Standardizing processes across multiple operating companies.
  • Supporting acquisitions and post-acquisition integrations.
  • Strengthening technical accounting and internal controls.
  • Improving financial reporting and operational visibility.
  • Developing and leading a growing accounting team.

Location & Work Schedule

This position is based in Nashville, Tennessee and follows a hybrid work arrangement.

Candidates should expect to work in the office approximately four days per week.
