Job description
Location: Wake County, North Carolina Contract Duration: Initial contract expected to start July 1, 2026 (multi-year, subject to renewal)
Client seeks two licensed and experienced psychiatrists to provide comprehensive psychiatric healthcare services to incarcerated individuals within its detention facilities. The psychiatrists will ensure timely psychiatric evaluations, treatment, medication management, and continuity of care from intake through release, supporting compliance with NC statutes, HIPAA, and NCCHC standards.
Key Objectives- Deliver evidence-based psychiatric services for inmates with mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders.
- Provide continuity of care through intake, incarceration, and release.
- Ensure compliance with NC statutes, HIPAA, and NCCHC standards for correctional health.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for crisis intervention, treatment planning, and reentry services.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation in electronic medical records.
- Conduct psychiatric screenings, evaluations, and diagnoses.
- Provide counseling on adherence to treatment and behavioral interventions.
- Prescribe/manage medications, including preparing petitions for involuntary administration when needed.
- Maintain inmate electronic medical records (diagnoses, treatment plans, medication logs).
- Supervise and provide clinical consultation to behavioral health and detention medical staff.
- Respond to on-call duties as per rotation.
- Provide admission/discharge orders and e-prescriptions for continuity of care.
- Participate in treatment teams, CQI initiatives, suicide prevention programs, and grievance responses.
- Support release planning, including referrals to community mental health providers.
- Submit monthly reports (hours worked, number of inmate cases).
- Comply with WCSO rules, NC statutes, HIPAA, and NCCHC standards.
- Licensed Psychiatrist (MD or DO) eligible to practice in North Carolina.
- Experience in correctional psychiatry, forensic settings, or large detention facilities.
- Knowledge of NCCHC standards, HIPAA, and correctional healthcare compliance.
- Familiarity with substance use disorder treatment, including MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment).
- Ability to function effectively in multidisciplinary teams within a high-security environment.
- 3+ years of correctional psychiatry or forensic psychiatry experience.
- Experience with suicide prevention programs and CQI in detention facilities.
- Knowledge of Wake County demographics and inmate population health needs.
- Strong documentation and electronic medical record management skills.
