What are redlines in the context of document review or contract negotiation?

Redlines refer to the visible edits, changes, or revisions made to a document, typically shown in red or with tracked changes, during the process of editing, reviewing, or negotiating contracts and other legal documents. The term 'redline' comes from the traditional practice of marking changes in red ink. Redlining helps all parties easily identify what has been added, removed, or modified, making the review process transparent and efficient. It is commonly used by lawyers, contract managers, and editors to ensure clarity and accountability in document revisions.

Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD, as well as document management systems, is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills help you effectively incorporate feedback and clarify changes with project teams. These skills ensure accurate and efficient updates to technical documents, minimizing errors and supporting smooth project workflows.
