Job description

The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Assistant, DSMB Unit for the BIOS Division in the School of Medicine. The Research Assistant provides operational, administrative, and technical support to clinical research studies. Serving under the DSMB Unit manager, this role acts as the primary liaison between trial clinical investigators, study team members, sponsors, and DSMB members. The primary functions of this role are to support investigators and research teams through the coordination of meeting logistics, DSMB-related study documentation, sponsor regulatory compliance, and file organizational management. The ideal candidate must possess exceptional organizational acumen and the demonstrated ability to dynamically prioritize tasks across multiple concurrent projects. This role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate and convey critical information across various stakeholders.
The Research Assistant oversees data collection, data organization, and/or data management or similar functions/tasks for research study(ies) in support of a PI or a research team.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Run routine and ad hoc reports.
  • Use standard tools and computer programs to review data.
  • Assist with data cleaning measures to ensure the accuracy of data and the preparation of tables.
  • Lead basic activities such as data collection and data entry.
  • May lead specific tasks and develop processes to ensure study activities occur effectively and efficiently.
  • May conduct literature searches to support faculty in research efforts.
  • May design and format papers/publications.
  • May assist PIs in writing summaries of papers for release as policy briefs or other channels.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties above
Research Operations & Study Coordination
  • Support day-to-day DSMB Unit operations, including coordination of DSMB-related study materials, DSMB meeting preparation (including coordination of meeting presentations), tracking deliverables, and maintaining organized electronic and paper filing systems across multiple studies.

Regulatory & Compliance Support
  • Assist with the submission and tracking of all DSMB-related study materials in accordance with institutional and sponsor requirements.
  • Maintain strict firewalls to safeguard unblinded interim study findings and closed session meeting materials.
  • Maintain up-to-date DSMB charters, rosters, and conflicts of interest forms across multiple active trials.

Minutes & Communication
  • Draft detailed, high-quality meeting minutes, obtain required review/approvals, and distribute according to DSMB charter requirements.
  • Assist DSMB members in the drafting of DSMB recommendations, obtain appropriate approvals, and distribute according to DSMB charter requirements.

Communication & Stakeholder Coordination
  • Serve as a liaison for research-related communications, including scheduling, correspondence, and coordination with internal teams, collaborators, and external study partners.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with research documentation, regulatory processes, or data management systems (e.g., REDCap and study tracking databases). Experience supporting clinical or academic research teams.
