Job description

Facilities amp; Operations Assistant
Status: Part-Time (average 14-18 hours per week from April through October; 10-12 hours per week November through March)
Schedule: Flexible schedule required, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and some holidays. Hours may vary based on Museum operations, events, and staffing needs.
Reports To: Director of Facilities and Sr. Director of Operations
Wage: $16/hour

Primary Function
The Facilities amp; Operations Assistant supports the maintenance, safety, and daily operation of the Museum's buildings, grounds, and public spaces. This position assists with groundskeeping, campus monitoring, event support, visitor services, and routine oversight of Museum property to help ensure a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for visitors, staff, volunteers, and guests.
Responsibilities
Campus Monitoring amp; Safety Support (40%)
  • Provide support during scheduled security shifts, including monitoring Museum grounds, buildings, parking areas, and facilities and report maintenance, safety, or security concerns to supervisors.
  • Assist with securing Museum buildings, gates, and public areas during opening, closing, and special events.
  • Support Museum safety procedures and respond appropriately to unusual situations or emergencies.
  • Maintain activity and incident logs when required.
Facilities amp; Grounds Support (30%)
  • Perform lawn mowing, trimming, leaf collection, and garden maintenance.
  • Collect trash and help maintain clean public spaces.
  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings, walkways, and grounds for maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Assist with general facility upkeep and minor maintenance tasks as assigned.
Events amp; Visitor Support (30%)
  • Assist with special events, rentals, and program setup and breakdown.
  • Assist with visitor traffic flow, parking operations, and crowd management during special events and periods of high attendance.
  • Transport tables, chairs, equipment, and event materials throughout the Museum campus.
  • Support other Museum departments as needed during events and daily operations.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate golf carts, utility vehicles, and basic grounds equipment, if authorized.
Qualifications
  • Valid New York State driver's license.
  • Experience with groundskeeping, facilities support, event setup, security, or related work preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Completion of a background check is required.

  • Work efficiently, courteously, and professionally with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Represent the Museum professionally in appearance and conduct.
  • Support the Museum's mission and demonstrate respect for the diverse audiences, cultures, and histories represented by the Museum.
