Job description
Nemours is seeking a Casual Part-time Museum Guide (Interpreter) to join our team in Wilmington, DE.. Museum Guide/Interpreter at Nemours Estate, historic home of Alfred I. du Pont. A successful guide will learn the people, dates, and events of the 1910 Mansion and Grounds and interact with the public in a friendly, informative, and knowledgeable manner. Working on a team of more than 30 interpreters, the guide will also attend extra learning opportunities throughout the season, which runs from 4/1/2025 until 12/30/2025
Primary Functions: Museum Guides represent Nemours Mansion to the visiting public in a gracious, informative and engaging manner. The Museum Guide spends a given amount of time covering a specific area of the Mansion (e.g., Reception Hall, Drawing Room, Dining Room, Pantry/Kitchen) and rotates to other areas as assigned during the course of the day or of his/her shift. As visitors enter and move through a given area, the Guide engages with them by sharing information, offering insights, telling stories and answering questions. The aim is to help visitors develop appreciation, gain understanding, deepen awareness, and be able to relate their own experiences and knowledge to the people, times and events associated with that area. To provide for the safety of visitors and the security of Nemours Mansion and its collections, Museum Guides observe visitors as they move through the facility and take appropriate measures to render assistance, intervene or respond to unusual situations.
Additionally, and as scheduled, one Museum Guide's primary responsibility will be to act as a liaison with members of the Mansion's Leadership (Management) Team and with the Security Guard on duty, and to provide back-up or relief coverage to other Guides in the Mansion.
Responsibilities:
- Through formal training, observation and self-study, acquire knowledge about rooms throughout Nemours Mansions, and their furnishings (e.g., furniture, artworks, decorative art objects, rugs and tapestries, as well about duPont family personalities and noteworthy or significant events in the history of Nemours Estate.
- Present information about Nemours Mansion, Nemours Estate, and members of the duPont family, clearly, concisely, and in an engaging manner, to visitors of diverse ages, backgrounds, interests and levels of understanding.
- Observe visitors as they move through Nemours Mansion, offering or providing assistance, intervening to protect the security of rooms and collections, and/or alerting other Guides, Mansion Management and/or Security personnel as needed or appropriate.
- When designated to do so, acts as primary liaison between the Guides, Mansion Leadership (Management), and the Security Guard on duty, and provides back-up support and coverage for other Interpreters as needed.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicant should have at least one year experience in a museum environment, or customer service.
- He/she should be comfortable with and enjoy talking to groups of all ages, have an interest in history, and a willingness to learn an extensive amount of material. Theatrical experience is a plus.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and be able to climb stairs.
- Ability to work 2-3 days a week.
