What is a receiving operations manager?

Receiving Operations Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the receipt, inspection, and storage of goods in warehouses or distribution centers. They manage teams to ensure shipments are processed efficiently and accurately, coordinate with suppliers and carriers, and maintain inventory accuracy. Their role includes implementing safety procedures, optimizing workflows, and troubleshooting issues that may arise during the receiving process. Effective Receiving Operations Managers help ensure that goods move smoothly into inventory, supporting the overall supply chain.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a receiving operations manager?

To thrive as a Receiving Operations Manager, you need expertise in inventory management, logistics, and warehouse operations, usually supported by a degree in supply chain management or related experience. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanning technology, and safety regulations is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set outstanding managers apart. These skills ensure accurate inventory control, efficient workflows, and a safe, productive receiving environment.

What are some common challenges a receiving operations manager faces, and how can they effectively address them?

Receiving Operations Managers often encounter challenges such as managing fluctuating shipment volumes, ensuring timely and accurate inventory counts, and maintaining clear communication with suppliers and internal teams. To address these challenges, successful managers implement standardized processes, leverage technology for inventory tracking, and foster strong relationships both within their team and with external partners. Proactive problem-solving and adaptability are key to maintaining efficiency and minimizing errors in a fast-paced receiving environment.

What is the difference between Receiving Operations Manager vs Warehouse Supervisor?

Receiving operations managers typically earn a competitive salary that varies based on experience, location, and industry. In general, the role offers a moderate to high income compared to entry-level positions in logistics and supply chain management, especially for those with certifications or extensive experience.

Job description

About the Role

Texas Sports Academy is a K-12 school designed for serious student-athletes who want both elite academics and high-level athletic development. Students cover 2x the material in just 2 hours a day, using the same 2-Hour Learning model as Alpha Schools. That frees up their entire afternoon for serious training, where they work alongside former pro and D1 athletes coaching them at the highest standard.

We are hiring an IT Support Specialist based in Austin, TX to support our IT Operations Manager with the daily work that keeps our device program and campus technology running. This is an in-person role well suited to a new grad ready to start a career in IT support.

What You'll Do
  • Support the IT Operations Manager:ย Partner closely with the IT Operations Manager on daily execution, taking ownership of assigned tasks and freeing them up to focus on higher-level work.
  • Device Configuration and Deployment:ย Assist with imaging and preparing MacBook Neos for use, including installing our standard software stack, applying MDM profiles, configuring user accounts, and enforcing security settings before devices are shipped.
  • Inventory and Shipping Support:ย Help receive inbound shipments, log serial numbers, maintain organized inventory, and pack and ship laptops to our schools, coaches, and staff across Texas.
  • Returns and Device Recovery:ย Process returned, damaged, or end-of-life devices, wipe and reimage devices for redeployment when possible, and retire devices that have reached end of life.
  • First-Line User Support:ย Serve as the first point of contact for students and staff experiencing device issues, including login problems, software errors, and hardware concerns. Resolve issues directly when possible and escalate to the IT Operations Manager when needed.
  • Documentation and Records:ย Keep device tracking, ticket notes, and internal documentation accurate and current so the team can operate efficiently.

Requirements

What We're Looking For
  • IT Support Experience:ย Hands-on IT support exposure through internships, help desk work, campus IT roles, coursework, or personal projects. You can walk us through the devices you supported, the issues you resolved, and the systems you kept running.
  • macOS and Mobile Device Familiarity:ย Working experience with macOS deployment and management, and comfort supporting iOS or comparable mobile devices.
  • MDM Platform Experience: Hands-on experience with Apple Business Manager, Jamf, Kandji, Mosyle, or a comparable platform.
  • Comfort With Hands-On Work:ย This role requires regular physical work, including receiving shipments, lifting boxes, organizing inventory, and preparing outbound packages. Candidates should be comfortable with the operational and logistics side of the role.
  • Strong Customer Service Orientation:ย Ability to communicate clearly and patiently with students and parents, particularly during stressful situations such as a device failure before class.
  • Attention to Detail:ย Consistent, accurate record-keeping across inventory, shipments, and device assignments.
  • AI Forward:ย We use AI tools daily to streamline communications, automate repetitive tasks, and improve troubleshooting. Familiarity with tools such as Perplexity Computer is a plus.
  • Location:ย Austin-based and in-person. Candidates must live in or around Austin to commute to the worksite.
Bonus Points
  • K-12 or 1:1 Device Program Experience:ย Prior experience supporting student device programs, including deployments of 100 or more devices.
  • Scripting or Automation Familiarity:ย Exposure to scripting or automation tools used to streamline device imaging and onboarding.
  • Certifications:ย CompTIA A+, Apple Certified Support Professional, or comparable certifications.
