Job Summary
The Principal Engineer will play a pivotal role in accelerating growth and strengthening TYLin's Transportation practice across Southern California. This position combines client leadership, strategic pursuit, and hands-on project delivery excellence.
Initial priorities include expanding and deepening relationships with LA Metro, Los Angeles County Public Works, and major cities and counties throughout Southern California-particularly in Orange County.
The role will also support major program delivery, zero-emission initiatives, multi-market pursuits, alternative delivery strategies, and data-driven transportation solutions. Working in close partnership with Irvine office leadership and regional/national practice leaders, this position will help scale TYLin's presence, revenue, and influence across the Southern California market.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
What You'll Lead
Strategic Client Leadership & Market Growth
  • Serve as a senior relationship owner for LA Metro, Los Angeles County Public Works, and key Southern California cities and counties, including Orange County agencies
  • Drive account growth strategies, including capture planning, executive engagement, and positioning for major pursuits
  • Strengthen TYLin's brand visibility through active leadership in WTS, ASCE, CMAA, and other industry organizations

Pursuit Strategy & Executive Positioning
  • Serve on the Southern California leadership team providing strategic direction on go/no-go decisions, capture strategies, and executive positioning
  • Lead or support highway-focused and multi-disciplinary pursuits in partnership with the existing highway design team and broader transportation practice
  • Coordinate cross-market and alternative delivery pursuits, aligning local strategy with corporate growth objectives

Program & Project Delivery Excellence
  • Serve as Project Manager on key roadway and transportation projects across Orange County and the greater Los Angeles region
  • Lead and mentor internal design teams and subconsultants, ensuring quality, schedule adherence, profitability, and client satisfaction
  • Provide strategic and hands-on support to active California programs to enhance delivery performance, margin, and follow-on opportunities

What You'll Bring
  • Degree & Licensure: Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and active PE license in California
  • Proven Experience: 20+ years leading, managing and delivering roadway projects, especially with Caltrans (District 4 and surrounding districts), LA Metro, LA County Public Work major Southern California cities and counties, including Orange County, SANDAG, TCA, SBCTA, RCTC, etc
  • Understanding of financial drivers, funding mechanisms, and business strategy related to transportation delivery, advanced education (MBA or similar), a plus
  • Strong experience interfacing with diverse stakeholders, such as utility companies, cities and counties
  • Technical Know-How: Deep familiarity with California design manuals, standards, and project development processes
  • Delivery Expertise: Experience in both Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build environments is a plus
  • Strong Communicator: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Client-Focused Leader: A proactive, relationship-driven mindset and commitment to high-quality, innovative solutions
  • Integrity & Collaboration: You lead with integrity and thrive in team-oriented, cross-functional settings

Additional Information
TYLin is committed to pay equity. As part of that commitment, we have provided the base compensation range of $168,000 - $247,400 annually for this position and local market.
