What is an RBT?

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are paraprofessionals who work under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to provide behavior therapy, often for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental conditions. RBTs implement treatment plans designed by BCBAs, collecting data and assisting with behavior modification strategies. They play a vital role in helping clients develop social, communication, and daily living skills while reducing problematic behaviors. RBTs must complete specific training, pass a certification exam, and adhere to ethical guidelines to maintain their credential.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an RBT?

To thrive as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you need a solid understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles, a high school diploma, and an RBT certification. Familiarity with data collection tools, ABA software, and behavior intervention systems is typically required. Strong communication, patience, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for effectively engaging with clients and collaborating with supervising professionals. These skills ensure the delivery of effective behavior interventions and support positive outcomes for individuals with developmental or behavioral challenges.

What challenges do RBTs face when working with clients, and how can they manage them?

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) often encounter challenges such as managing challenging behaviors, maintaining client engagement, and ensuring consistency with treatment plans. To address these, RBTs benefit from ongoing supervision, clear communication with their supervising BCBA, and staying organized with data collection. Building rapport with clients and collaborating closely with family members and other team members can also help create a supportive environment and improve outcomes.

Is it hard to get hired as an RBT?

Employers often look for strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to work with individuals with behavioral challenges, which can influence hiring difficulty.

  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, competency assessments, and ongoing training.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements, professional standards, and organizational policies.
  • Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled sessions, meetings, trainings, and other responsibilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Medicaid Provider Number preferred. If you do not currently have one, you must be willing to complete the Medicaid enrollment process as required by Mindful Sprouts.

  • Must speak English.
  • Prior experience working with children preferred.
  • Ability to maintain HIPAA compliance, client confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to pass a background check and required pre-employment screenings.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel to client homes, schools, and/or clinic locations.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, sit on the floor, and remain physically active throughout therapy sessions.
  • Flexible availability, including afternoons and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to complete required competency assessments and continuing education to maintain RBT certification in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Broward County and/or Palm Beach County badge/credential preferred.
  • Active RBT certification at the time of hire.
  • Prior ABA experience or experience working with children with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities.
  • Prior experience collecting and recording session data.
  • Experience writing clear, objective session notes.
  • Knowledge of behavior intervention and skill-acquisition strategies.
