What is a rapid prototyping technician?

A Rapid Prototyping Technician is a skilled professional who operates and maintains equipment used to quickly create physical models or prototypes from digital designs, often using technologies such as 3D printing, CNC machining, or laser cutting. Their main role is to turn design concepts into tangible parts for testing and evaluation, enabling engineers and designers to iterate and refine products efficiently. They also troubleshoot machines, prepare materials, and ensure prototypes meet specified requirements. This position requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, and familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rapid prototyping technician?

To thrive as a Rapid Prototyping Technician, you need a strong background in mechanical design, fabrication techniques, and material properties, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or degree. Proficiency with CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and rapid prototyping tools is essential, along with familiarity with industry standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with design teams and adapting to changing project needs. These skills and qualities ensure efficient prototype development, high-quality output, and successful integration of designs into the product development process.

What are some common challenges faced by rapid prototyping technicians, and how can they be addressed?

Rapid Prototyping Technicians often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, frequent design changes, and troubleshooting unexpected issues with 3D printers or CNC machines. Staying adaptable and maintaining clear communication with design and engineering teams is crucial to manage shifting priorities and resolve technical problems promptly. Proactive maintenance of equipment and continuous learning about new prototyping technologies can also help technicians stay ahead and ensure high-quality outputs.

What is the difference between Rapid Prototyping Technician vs 3D Printing Technician?

AspectRapid Prototyping Technician3D Printing Technician
CredentialsTechnical diploma or certification in prototyping or manufacturingTechnical diploma or certification in additive manufacturing or 3D printing
Work EnvironmentManufacturing labs, R&D departments, prototype development facilities3D printing labs, production floors, design studios
Industry UsageProduct development, engineering, manufacturingDesign firms, manufacturing, rapid prototyping services

Both roles involve working with manufacturing technologies, but Rapid Prototyping Technicians focus on creating prototypes using various methods, while 3D Printing Technicians specialize in operating and maintaining 3D printers. The roles often overlap in skills and work environments, but their primary tools and focus areas differ.

Job description

Join Us in Texas — Build the Future of Sustainable Biotechnology

Engineering & Rapid Prototyping Roles | New US Manufacturing Facility | Mission-Driven Science

Are you a hands-on engineer who loves building, testing, and improving real-world hardware?

We're a global team of bold, passionate innovators developing ground-breaking biological technologies designed to sustainably and safely control insects that transmit deadly diseases and devastate crops. As insects pose growing threats to human health, food systems, and global stability, our work has never been more urgent or more exciting.

And now, we're expanding into the United States, opening a brand-new facility right here in San Antonio, Texas, and we need engineers who can help us design, build, and iterate our ways of working.

What We're Looking For

If you're a practical, curious engineer who's happiest at the bench turning ideas into working prototypes, we want to meet you. We're especially keen to hear from engineers with a mechanical or design background, but electrical and electronics engineers with some coding ability are also of strong interest.

You may have a background in:

  • Mechanical engineering, product design, or design engineering
  • Electrical or electronics engineering, ideally with basic coding/scripting ability
  • Rapid prototyping, model-making, or hardware development
  • Bio-systems, bioengineering, or other biological engineering disciplines

You'll hold a first degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical/electronics, biosystems, or a closely related discipline).

Experience in any of the following is required:

  • Rapid prototyping — building, testing, and iterating physical designs quickly
  • CAD design and modelling for mechanical or electromechanical systems
  • Hands-on fabrication, assembly, and troubleshooting of hardware
  • Practical problem-solving in a fast-paced, build-as-you-go environment
  • Working from concept through to a functioning prototype or pilot system

Experience in any of the following is helpful but not essential:

  • Bio-systems, insectary, or other biological/agricultural engineering environments
  • Basic coding or scripting (e.g., Python, C++, or similar) to support electronics or automation
  • Working with regulated, laboratory, or manufacturing environments

Most importantly: you're a natural independent problem solver who enjoys getting your hands dirty, learning fast, and seeing your designs come to life.

For senior-level roles, we're also looking for engineers who can lead, not just build:

  • Experience of ownership of a workstream or product area, including sign-off on designs and prototypes
  • Sound engineering judgement under ambiguity in a fast-moving, greenfield environment
  • Mentoring junior engineers and technicians on-site
  • Confidence acting as the technical escalation point with remote/international HQ teams

US Requirements

  • Legally authorised to work in the US.
  • Must be able to work on-site at our new facility in San Antonio, Texas

Why Join Us?

Your Work Will Help:

  • Reduce the burden of diseases
  • Protect crops and strengthen food security
  • Deliver sustainable, scalable solutions that safeguard communities
  • Support a world adapting to changes in insect populations

As one of the founding engineers of our US expansion, you'll help design and shape new facilities, workflows, and hardware in a high-growth, mission-driven environment. You'll be part of a team united by purpose with brilliant, curious minds driven by one shared goal: to improve lives and livelihoods around the world.

This is more than a job. It's a mission. Join us.

Apply now and help build the future of sustainable biotech in Texas.
