Range Safety Officer

Summary

Under direction of the Range Master, will monitor client activity on the grounds and enforce all firing range safety rules and enforce policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe firing range by monitoring clients to ensure all firing range rules and regulations are enforced and in compliance with all applicable codes and regulations to include Federal, State and local codes

  • Maintains targets, facilities, and range equipment; assists in maintaining and ensuring compliance with range regulations

  • Monitors the flow of shooters through the firing range and communicates any troublesome activities to Range Master

  • Keeps abreast of new methods or changes in firearms training techniques

  • Assists Rangemaster with requests and coordination of supply acquisition

  • Coordinates the safe handling and salvage of hazardous materials, shell casings and ammunition residue

  • Assists in compiling program statistics and prepares operating and incident reports on daily training and programs

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) and five (5) years of practical law enforcement/or firing range experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Skillin preparing,maintaining,and reviewing required records,reports,anddocumentation

  • Ability to take immediate action when circumstances require it; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, and the general public

  • Must have or obtain NRA Range Safety Officer Certification within 5 months of employment

  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation

  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license

  • Must be able to follow emergency response plans and take immediate action when required

  • Must be able and willing to attend training at department's discretion

  • May be required to work a varied work schedule from week to week to include weekends in the best interest of Bexar County; position is not allowed to work over 29hrs per week Preferred Qualifications:

  • Firing range operations experience

  • Firearms safety experience

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Working in small booth, indoor and outdoor environments, occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, hazardous/toxic atmosphere; hazardous material; flammable liquids, high noise areas, insects, insect bites, dust and unfavorable fumes and vapors

  • Frequently moves items weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information

  • Generally operates a computer and other office productivity machinery

  • Frequently uses hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls

  • Positions self to perform essential functions

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position

  • Must be able to hear and respond appropriately to range commands and facility announcements

  • Frequently walks, stands, sits, talks, hears, use both hands and arms, for long periods of time

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus with or without corrective eyewear
