How much do rally engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for rally engineering in California is $140,209.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $112,500.00 and $170,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to become a rally engineer?

To become a rally engineer, candidates typically need a degree in mechanical, automotive, or electrical engineering and experience with vehicle dynamics, telemetry, and data analysis. Skills in troubleshooting, familiarity with rally racing environments, and knowledge of engineering tools like CAD and simulation software are also important.

How do rally engineers typically collaborate with other teams during race preparation and events?

Rally Engineers work closely with drivers, mechanics, and data analysts to optimize vehicle performance before and during rally events. They participate in pre-race briefings, analyze telemetry data, and recommend adjustments to the car's setup based on driver feedback and track conditions. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as engineers must quickly relay technical insights and coordinate with pit crews to implement changes under tight time constraints. This collaborative environment fosters continuous learning and skill development, making it a dynamic and rewarding field for those passionate about motorsports.

How much do rally engineers make?

Rally engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the level of responsibility. Senior engineers or those working with top teams may earn higher salaries, and the role often requires knowledge of vehicle dynamics, data analysis, and specialized tools.

What is the difference between Rally Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectRally EngineeringMechanical Engineering
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in mechanical or automotive engineering, with specialized rally or motorsport certificationsRequires a degree in mechanical engineering; professional licensure varies by region
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in motorsport settings, testing facilities, and race eventsBroader environments including manufacturing, design labs, and research facilities
Industry UsageSpecific to motorsport and rally teams, often project-basedWidely used across industries like automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy

Rally Engineering focuses on designing, testing, and optimizing vehicles specifically for rally and motorsport events, requiring specialized knowledge of vehicle dynamics and race conditions. Mechanical Engineering offers a broader scope, covering various sectors that involve designing and analyzing mechanical systems. While both roles require a strong engineering background, Rally Engineering is more specialized towards motorsport applications.

What is rally engineering?

Rally Engineering refers to the specialized field of designing, building, and maintaining vehicles for rally racing. Engineers in this discipline focus on optimizing performance, safety, and reliability for the demanding conditions of rally events, which often involve mixed terrain and extreme environments. Their work covers suspension tuning, engine modifications, weight reduction, and the integration of advanced navigation and safety systems. Rally engineers collaborate closely with drivers and mechanics to ensure vehicles meet both competition regulations and the unique challenges of each rally stage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rally engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rally Engineer, you need a strong background in automotive engineering, mechanical systems, and motorsport dynamics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in data acquisition systems, simulation software, and familiarity with FIA regulations are essential technical requirements. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you work effectively with drivers, mechanics, and support staff under pressure. These competencies ensure optimal vehicle performance, safety, and competitive results in the demanding environment of rally racing.

Job description

Job Summary:
Sigma is the AI apps and analytics platform connected to the cloud data warehouse. They are seeking a Senior Product Manager, Platform Performance & Infrastructure to drive the product roadmap and enhance backend capabilities that power Sigma's platform, focusing on performance, observability, and customer needs.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Define and own the multi-quarter product roadmap for Sigma's platform performance and infrastructure surface area, including query execution, compute and caching, metadata services, compiler-related components, agent infrastructure, and connectors.
โ€ข Set a clear vision for the platform that balances near-term enterprise needs with long-term scalability investments.
โ€ข Rally engineering, design, and GTM stakeholders around a shared roadmap and communicate progress and tradeoffs clearly to leadership.
โ€ข Make active prioritization calls across competing platform investments, clearly articulating the reasoning and expected customer impact behind sequencing decisions.
โ€ข Define the strategy and roadmap for agent monitoring capabilities, enabling customers and internal teams to observe, debug, and optimize AI agent behavior within Sigma's platform.
โ€ข Own platform observability infrastructure โ€” including logging, tracing, alerting, and diagnostic tooling โ€” ensuring Sigma's platform surfaces actionable insights to both engineering teams and enterprise customers.
โ€ข Partner with engineering and Customer Success to translate observability gaps into shipped product improvements.
โ€ข Build the foundation for enterprise-grade reliability visibility, giving customers confidence in how their workloads are running on Sigma at scale.
โ€ข Partner closely with engineering to scope, prioritize, and ship improvements across latency, concurrency, throughput, and cost efficiency.
โ€ข Break down complex technical initiatives into clear milestones and incremental wins.
โ€ข Maintain momentum in ambiguous, fast-moving environments with strong judgment on tradeoffs.
โ€ข Own delivery accountability end-to-end โ€” from problem definition through scoping, execution, launch, and iteration.
โ€ข Define product requirements across the full query lifecycle โ€” from generation and compilation to execution, caching, and results delivery.
โ€ข Balance tradeoffs across performance, correctness, debuggability, and cost.
โ€ข Identify bottlenecks in the query pipeline and work with engineering to drive measurable improvements in latency and throughput.
โ€ข Engage directly and regularly with enterprise customers to surface performance pain points, validate roadmap priorities, and co-develop solutions for high-scale use cases.
โ€ข Partner with Customer Success, Support, and Sales Engineering to translate field feedback into product requirements.
โ€ข Act as an internal advocate for customer needs within platform planning and prioritization forums.
โ€ข Build strong relationships with key enterprise accounts and use those relationships to continuously pressure-test and sharpen the platform roadmap.
โ€ข Identify platform gaps impacting large customers, high-concurrency workloads, and embedded analytics use cases.
โ€ข Work across teams to address real-world reliability, latency, and scalability challenges at enterprise scale.
โ€ข Proactively surface and address platform risks before they become customer-facing issues.
โ€ข Contribute to the strategy and prioritization of new data connectors and platform extensions in partnership with engineering.
โ€ข Identify integration opportunities that expand Sigma's reach across the modern data stack.
โ€ข Define and track success metrics related to performance, reliability, observability, and customer experience.
โ€ข Use data and customer feedback to guide continuous prioritization and iteration.
โ€ข Establish a regular cadence of sharing platform health metrics with engineering, GTM, and leadership stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 4+ years of product management experience in B2B SaaS, data platforms, analytics, infrastructure, or developer-facing products.
โ€ข Demonstrated experience owning and delivering a product roadmap end-to-end across technically complex areas.
โ€ข Strong understanding of databases, distributed systems, query engines, caching, APIs, and cloud infrastructure.
โ€ข Proven track record of working directly with enterprise customers to understand needs and translate them into product decisions.
โ€ข Clear, concise communicator who can make complex backend topics understandable to engineering, customers, and executives alike.
โ€ข Ability to connect backend platform investments to tangible customer outcomes and business value.
โ€ข Action-oriented, adaptable, and energized by working in a fast-moving startup environment.
