JOB SUMMARY
Performs a wide variety of heavy-duty manual labor type work in building,
Paving, repair, cleaning, maintenance, and snow removal of city streets and alley right-of-way.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in patching and sealing streets.
  • Will be assigned to any division of the department.
  • Will be assigned to weed crew to cut weeds along streets and alleys, around hedges and signs in vacant lots.
  • Will operate snow plow during snow season.
  • Will shovel sand, gravel, and asphalt to and from trucks.
  • Cleans and removes snow and ice from streets, alleys, and sidewalks.
  • May act as a flagman along city streets to warn motorists of road construction work in progress.
  • Clean up trash and debris along city streets and alleys.
  • Will pick up dead animals when required.
  • Rake, shovel, sweep, and pick up leaves as required by City Leaf-up Program.
  • Carry in or remove heavy desks, file cabinets, and other office equipment in city offices.
  • Perform other physically heavy duties as may be required.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Good work record with prompt arrival and attendance.
  • Ability to communicate, get along, and work well with fellow employees.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must have a valid Indiana Driver's License.
  • Must obtain a (CDL) Class "A" Commercial Driver's License from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles within 90 days of hire.
  • All new hires, transfers, and bid awards for this position must have on file, or must obtain a valid Department of Transportation physical exam card and the required drug and alcohol test(NIDA) as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation before they are allowed to work in this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to use simple hand tools relating to basis job assignments.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safety rules and regulations required on assigned work projects.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to learn the methods and practices used in road repair; perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions. Ability to use; shovel, rake. Lute rake, leaf rake, sledge hammer, hand tools, and other tools of the trade.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
  • Follow one or two step instructions of routine and repetitive tasks.
  • Carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
  • Follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.
  • Ability to write identifying information; request supplies verbally or in writing.
  • Good vision with or without correction.
  • Exerting in excess of 100lbs. in force occasionally.
  • Exerting in excess of 50lbs. of force frequently.
  • Exerting in excess of 20lbs of force constantly.
  • Body agility and equilibrium is emphasized.
  • Position requires above normal lifting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching standing, working, pushing, pulling, grasping and use of legs, upper body, arms and back muscles.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are preformed outside in a variety of weather conditions; extreme hot and cold, wind, rain, snow, dirt, dust, noise, grease, unsanitary conditions.
