Job description

Description:

Verde Canyon Railroad is seeking a qualified Conductor to support both our scenic excursion trains and freight operations. This safety-sensitive role is responsible for the safe movement of trains, compliance with railroad regulations, andโ€”during excursion serviceโ€”delivering a positive and memorable guest experience through one of Arizonaโ€™s most scenic rail corridors.

Key Responsibilities

Train Operations & Safety


  • Maintain charge of the train and ensure safe operation in accordance with FRA regulations, railroad operating rules, and company policies
  • Coordinate closely with the locomotive engineer and other crew members
  • Perform required inspections, brake tests, and safety checks
  • Respond appropriately to operational issues or emergency situations

Freight Operations

  • Perform and supervise switching, spotting, pickups, and setouts
  • Verify train consists, waybills, and freight documentation
  • Ensure proper securement and handling of freight cars
  • Identify and report mechanical defects or unsafe conditions

Excursion Service & Guest Interaction

  • Serve as the onboard authority and a professional representative of Verde Canyon Railroad
  • Make safety and informational announcements as needed
  • Assist with passenger boarding and address guest questions or concerns

Crew & Compliance

  • Provide direction and leadership to onboard crew members
  • Complete required reports and documentation accurately and on time
  • Participate in training, certification, and recurrent safety programs
Requirements:

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior railroad experience preferred; conductor qualification highly desirable
  • Strong knowledge of railroad safety and operating rules
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Flexible availability, including weekends, holidays, and variable schedules

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb on and off rail equipment
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain and stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Meet all requirements for a safety-sensitive railroad position
Preferred Experience
  • Short line or freight railroad operations
  • Passenger or excursion rail service
  • Hazmat training or certification
