Job description

Job Title: Rail Yard Groundskeeper Location: Alexandria, VA Type: Contract To Hire Compensation: $27.00 Work Model: Onsite – onsite

Overview System One is seeking a reliable and hardworking Rail Yard Groundskeeper / Grounds Maintenance Technician to maintain the safety, cleanliness, and appearance of a newly constructed rail yard and surrounding properties. This position is responsible for vegetation control, grounds maintenance, snow removal, debris cleanup, and operating light equipment to ensure the rail yard remains safe and operational year-round. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, can safely operate equipment, and is willing to travel to assist at other rail yard locations as business needs require.

Responsibilities

  • Perform weed mitigation and vegetation control throughout the rail yard.
  • Remove brush, trees, and other vegetation that may interfere with rail operations or create safety hazards.
  • Perform seasonal snow removal and ice mitigation using hand tools and equipment.
  • Remove rocks, debris, and other obstructions from rail yard property and access roads.
  • Operate skid steers and other light equipment to support grounds maintenance and site improvement projects.
  • Perform general groundskeeping including mowing, trimming, cleanup, and maintaining drainage areas.
  • Inspect the property for safety hazards and report maintenance concerns.
  • Assist with fencing, signage, and other outdoor maintenance projects as needed.
  • Support general labor activities related to rail yard operations and facility upkeep.
  • Maintain landscaping and grounds equipment, ensuring it is clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and railroad safety procedures.
  • Travel to other rail yards or company facilities to provide grounds maintenance support as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, construction, forestry, public works, railroad maintenance, or heavy equipment operation preferred.
  • Experience operating skid steers, compact equipment, tractors, or similar machinery.
  • Ability to safely use chainsaws, string trimmers, mowers, blowers, and other landscaping equipment is a plus.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and work on uneven terrain throughout the day.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Ability to safely operate powered equipment and perform physically demanding work.
  • Railroad, rail yard, industrial site, or utility maintenance experience preferred.
  • Tree removal or brush clearing experience preferred.
  • Snow removal experience using equipment preferred.
  • Skid steer certification or equivalent equipment experience preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
