Job description

KSBW 8 News, the Hearst-owned NBC and ABC affiliate serving California's Central Coast, is looking for a passionate and driven Meteorologist to join our weather team in Salinas.

We are seeking a meteorologist who understands the science behind the forecast and knows how to translate it into clear, relatable storytelling for our viewers. The ideal candidate is energized by severe weather coverage and can deliver accurate, calm, and continuous weather coverage across all platforms when it matters most.

This is a hands-on role for a true team player. You will be involved in every aspect of the weather operation, including forecasting, creating compelling graphics, and reporting from the field when needed. We are looking for someone who embraces new technology, enjoys experimenting with presentation styles, and is eager to find fresh ways to connect with our audience.

Our next meteorologist will be a strong communicator who can summarize complex information, strike the right tone during breaking weather, keep viewers informed and safe, and perform confidently under pressure. Community engagement is also essential. This role includes participating in outreach efforts such as school visits and local events.

You will report to the Chief Meteorologist and the News Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Give viewers accurate, compelling, and understandable weather forecasts
  • Will provide urgent, immediate weather information before and during severe weather events
  • Can simultaneously provide content on TV, for our radio partners, and on our digital platforms
  • Will use all the technology available to us, to tell an intriguing weather story
  • Will be deployed in the field during weather events
  • Gather information and summarize facts and content for broadcast
  • Always convey a positive brand image for the station in the community and on all platforms
  • Write web and social stories about the weather
  • Interact with viewers and users on social media sites
  • Flexibility to work any shift
  • Knowledgeable about how to interpret and translate high-powered radar data

Requirements:

  • Professional or schooling on-air experience handling breaking news and severe weather coverage
  • In-depth knowledge of weather science and forecasting
  • Dynamic on-air presence with a conversational weather presentation
  • Knowledgeable about how to interpret and translate high-powered radar data
  • Experience with common television weather systems
  • Experience with live field reporting on weather and other topics
  • NWA and CBM seals are a plus
  • Related military experience will be considered
  • Bilingual a Plus

 The estimated base salary range for this role is between $60,000 and $65,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
