What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in race timing at sporting events?

Professionals in Race Timing are responsible for setting up timing equipment at event sites, ensuring all systems are functioning correctly, and coordinating with event organizers before and during races. On event day, they monitor timing systems, process participant data in real time, and troubleshoot any technical issues that arise. After the race, they verify results for accuracy and may assist in reporting and distributing official times. This role often involves working early mornings, weekends, and occasional travel, and requires excellent teamwork with race directors, volunteers, and technical staff.

What is a race timing?

A Race Timing job involves managing the timing and results of races, such as marathons, triathlons, and cycling events. Race timers set up and operate timing equipment, ensure accurate participant tracking, and process race results. They may use RFID chips, manual timing systems, or other technologies to record finish times. This role requires attention to detail, technical skills, and the ability to work in fast-paced environments. Race timers often collaborate with event organizers to ensure smooth race operations and accurate reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the race timing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Race Timing, candidates should have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of event management or sports administration. Familiarity with race timing software and hardware, such as RFID chip systems, finish line cameras, and data management platforms, is highly recommended. Effective communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential soft skills in this role. These attributes help ensure accurate results, smooth event operations, and a positive experience for both participants and organizers.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer โ€“ Navigation And State Estimation (r3123) Develop robust navigation and state estimation algorithms for defense aviation systems in contested environments About The Role

Shield AI's Hivemind autonomy team is building nextโ€‘generation autonomy and navigation solutions for resilient, missionโ€‘critical systems. As a Senior Engineer, you will contribute directly to the design, development, integration, test, and deployment of the Hivemind navigation stack.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  1. Research and develop advanced state estimation and navigation algorithms to ensure assured Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) in contested environments.
  2. Design, write, and deploy productionโ€‘quality C++ software for aviation platforms requiring realโ€‘time, deterministic performance.
  3. Build and maintain comprehensive unit, integration, and systemโ€‘level tests to validate navigation software performance under operational constraints.
  4. Develop modeling, calibration, and simulation tools for inertial and aided navigation technologies used in airborne platforms.
  5. Participate in agileโ€‘based product planning, feature definition, capacity estimation, and crossโ€‘team collaboration.
  6. Contribute to ongoing system performance evaluation, regression analysis, and V&V (Verification and Validation) efforts.
Required Qualifications:
  • Strong proficiency in modern C++ (C++11 or newer) and professional experience developing software for embedded Linux systems.
  • Experience designing and deploying state estimation algorithms (e.g., EKF, UKF) in realโ€‘world defense or aerospace applications.
  • Familiarity with developing for constrained environments requiring deterministic timing and high reliability.
  • Professional experience with continuous integration (CI) workflows and automated C++ testing.
  • Practical understanding of inertial navigation systems (INS), GNSS integration, and navigation error modeling.
  • Ability to deploy and maintain robust, efficient, productionโ€‘level C++ code.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB or Python for prototyping is acceptable; however, primary development experience must be in C++.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience developing and deploying assured PNT systems for DoD customers.
  • Expertise calibrating and integrating IMUs, GPS receivers, magnetometers, and barometric sensors.
  • Familiarity with alternative navigation techniques, such as celestial navigation, terrainโ€‘aided navigation, or visionโ€‘based navigation (VBN).
  • Experience validating and verifying navigation systems in operational test environments.
Compensation & Benefits
  • $160,000 - $240,000 a year, salary within range listed + bonus + benefits + equity for fullโ€‘time employees.
  • Temporary employees receive pay within range listed above plus temporary benefits package (applicable after 60 days of employment).
  • All offers are contingent on a cleared background and possible reference check.
