*This is a part-time Other Personnel Service (OPS) Environmental Specialist I position working with the Department of Health in Lee County.*
This $19.23-$20.19 per hour, 24 hours minimum per week, part-time Environmental Specialist position performs duties under the direction of the Environmental Manager with the Environmental Health and Engineering Section of the Florida Department of Health in Lee County.
The primary focus areas for the incumbent will start with training to perform quality assurance inspections and enforcement in the following areas:
  • Public Swimming Pool Inspections
  • Public Drinking Water Systems Sample Collection
  • Mobile Home/RV Parks

Additional training and experience may follow, in the programs listed below, as priorities allow:
  • Biomedical Waste
  • Sanitary Complaints Investigation
  • Annual assessments of Aerobic Treatment Units (Advanced Septic Systems)
  • Verification of Septic System Abandonments
  • Body Art/Body Piercing & Tattooing
  • Group Care
  • Migrant Farmworker Housing

  • Food Hygiene
  • Sanitary Complaints and Legal Enforcement

These inspections protect public health by regulating and enforcing best practices, which in turn reduces the public's exposure to disease and injury.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and skill in using field equipment required, including but not limited to operating a laser level, shovel, auger, Munsell Color Charts, drill, and other equipment as deemed necessary to perform environmental health inspections
  • Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences
  • Knowledge of and basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage
  • Ability to operate general office equipment
  • Ability to follow office procedures, and practices
