What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, computer science, and often a graduate degree in physics, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), simulators, and cloud-based quantum platforms is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are key soft skills that help drive innovation in this rapidly evolving domain. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, optimizing, and implementing quantum algorithms and systems that push the boundaries of computational capabilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with quantum computers?

Professionals working with quantum computers often encounter challenges such as error rates in qubits, limited scalability of current hardware, and the need for specialized algorithms. Collaborating closely with physicists, engineers, and computer scientists is essential to troubleshoot issues and push the boundaries of what current systems can achieve. Staying up-to-date with rapid advances in both hardware and software is also key, as the field is constantly evolving and requires a commitment to ongoing learning.

What is a quantum computer?

A quantum computer is a type of computer that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information. Unlike classical computers, which use bits to represent data as 0s or 1s, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to perform certain complex calculations much faster than traditional computers. They are particularly promising for tasks such as cryptography, optimization, and simulating molecular structures. However, quantum computers are still in the experimental stage and are not yet widely available for general use.

Quantum Computers are physical devices that leverage quantum mechanics to perform computations, often requiring advanced physics knowledge. Quantum Software Engineers design and develop software to run on these devices, focusing on algorithms and programming. While quantum computers are hardware-focused, quantum software engineers work on the applications that utilize quantum hardware, making their roles interconnected but distinct.

Job description

We are seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for our Broomfield, CO location, to join the team developing a next-generation quantum computer. The ideal candidate will be a comprehensive systems engineering professional with a background in physics or engineering. This role will be responsible for guiding the system through its entire lifecycle-from initial conceptualization and design through detailed development, rigorous validation, and product release. By facilitating cross-team collaboration, integrating technical insights, and maintaining a holistic view of the project's technical scope, this role will be instrumental in bridging the system's architectural vision with practical implementation. Candidates should expect to be immersed in a fast-paced, team-based, and challenging technical environments where an individual with talent and initiative can stand out and thrive.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop, define, and manage system requirements, specifications, and engineering documentation for a future generation trapped-ion quantum computer; track progress and compliance across multiple teams to these requirements and documents.
  • Create and execute the System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) for a next-generation quantum computer
  • Enable the cohesive design of a large next-generation quantum computer by defining the physical and functional breakdown between subsystems, defining interfaces between subsystems, and writing interface control documents (ICDs).
  • Work with technical and program management teams to develop "right size" tools, change-management processes, version control, architecture documentation, and artifacts appropriate to the maturity of the technology.
  • Work with subsystem leads and other systems engineers to define, derive, organize and communicate requirements for each quantum computer subsystem
  • Work with subsystem leads, architects, and other systems engineers to complete and document key design trade studies.
  • Track risk assessments and risk mitigation efforts.
  • Help organize and conduct system design reviews, ensuring artifacts are updated and accessible.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clear understanding and buy-in.
  • Work closely with quantum physicists and electrical, optical, mechanical, and software engineers to align cross-functional goals.
  • Mentor junior engineers

YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor's degree minimum
  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, hardware design, system integration, or scientific R&D, inclusive of PhD or post-doctoral experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in a systems engineering role.
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

WE VALUE:
  • Master's Degree/Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering or related technical field preferred
  • Proven experience in system engineering or system architecture of highly complex, large-scale technologies (e.g., quantum computers, atomic clocks, spacecraft, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, or other multidisciplinary hardware systems)
  • Experience deconstructing highly complex systems into clear and comprehensible constituent pieces and work packages
  • Strong background in requirements engineering, system verification, and validation processes
  • Familiarity with Model Based System Engineering (MBSE)
