How much do quantum computer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for quantum computer in the United States is $20.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.55 and $23.32 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, computer science, and often a graduate degree in physics, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), simulators, and cloud-based quantum platforms is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are key soft skills that help drive innovation in this rapidly evolving domain. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, optimizing, and implementing quantum algorithms and systems that push the boundaries of computational capabilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with quantum computers?

Professionals working with quantum computers often encounter challenges such as error rates in qubits, limited scalability of current hardware, and the need for specialized algorithms. Collaborating closely with physicists, engineers, and computer scientists is essential to troubleshoot issues and push the boundaries of what current systems can achieve. Staying up-to-date with rapid advances in both hardware and software is also key, as the field is constantly evolving and requires a commitment to ongoing learning.

What is a quantum computer?

A quantum computer is a type of computer that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information. Unlike classical computers, which use bits to represent data as 0s or 1s, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to perform certain complex calculations much faster than traditional computers. They are particularly promising for tasks such as cryptography, optimization, and simulating molecular structures. However, quantum computers are still in the experimental stage and are not yet widely available for general use.

About the job
As an organization, Google maintains a portfolio of research projects driven by fundamental research, new product innovation, product contribution and infrastructure goals, while providing individuals and teams the freedom to emphasize specific types of work. As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more.
As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.
As a Research Scientist, you will be joining a team building a fault-tolerant quantum computer based on neutral atoms. You will be involved in research and development to advance the neutral atom quantum platform, translating theoretical concepts into practical experimental setups. The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 bonus equity benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
