What is a quantitative model validation analyst?

Quantitative Model Validation Analysts are professionals who assess and validate financial models used by banks and financial institutions. They ensure that these models are accurate, reliable, and comply with regulatory standards. Their work involves testing model assumptions, reviewing model methodologies, and analyzing model outputs to identify potential risks or weaknesses. By providing an independent review, they help organizations maintain the integrity and performance of their risk management and financial forecasting tools.

What are some typical challenges faced by quantitative model validation analysts when assessing complex financial models?

Quantitative Model Validation Analysts often encounter challenges such as interpreting intricate model methodologies, ensuring data integrity, and effectively communicating technical findings to stakeholders who may not have a quantitative background. Additionally, staying current with evolving regulatory requirements and industry standards can be demanding. Collaborating closely with model developers, risk managers, and auditors is crucial to address model limitations and propose actionable improvements, making strong communication and analytical skills essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quantitative model validation analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantitative Model Validation Analyst, you need a strong background in quantitative finance, statistics, and programming, typically supported by a degree in mathematics, finance, or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software such as Python, R, MATLAB, and model risk management frameworks is essential, and certifications like FRM or CFA are advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart by enabling them to explain complex model risks and recommendations clearly. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and regulatory compliance of financial models within an organization.

Job description

Location: US remote, with preference for Pacific or Mountain Time. Candidates in SF / Bay Area, Austin, Denver, or other emerging team hubs are especially encouraged to apply.

Employment

Full-time, permanent

About Dataro

Dataro is an ethically minded SaaS startup using machine learning to help not-for-profits raise more money and do more good. Our platform powers fundraising for organizations across the world, helping them run smarter campaigns and improve donor engagement using data-driven insights.

Why this role exists

We're building out the modeling and data science behind Dataro's US partnerships and our prospect research product. We're looking for a senior data scientist who loves digging into messy, large-scale data: finding the signal, solving the problem, and shipping it. You'll own work end to end, from analysis through to production, with real autonomy and close collaboration with data engineering and product.

This isn't a heads-down modeling role. It's for someone energized by hard data questions who wants their work to ship.

What you'll work on

Partnership models. A distinct set of predictive models, tuned to each partner's customer profile and separate from our core product models. You'll pick it up, iterate and improve on existing models and build new models as partners come on board, and get to the bottom of prediction issues along the way (why does this donor have this score? what in this client's data is throwing the model off?).

Prospect AI. Our best-in-class prospect research tool, used by hundreds of nonprofits today and thousands soon. It uses agentic AI to research and build rich profiles on prospective donors — and the engineering team is driving it to run far faster and cheaper at scale. Your job is the data and quantitative side: solving identity resolution and data quality problems, building out the underlying profile database, and proposing quantitative solutions to large-scale data issues. If you like finding the signal in huge, messy datasets, this is your playground.

What you'll bring

4+ years applied data science or ML experience, including production model deployment

Strong Python and standard ML frameworks

Solid grasp of experimental design, model validation, and statistical methods

A self-starter who takes end-to-end ownership

LLM / generative AI experience — feature development, evaluation, or hybrid approaches

Fundraising, wealth screening, or nonprofit data experience

Familiarity with donor propensity or wealth modelling

AWS or equivalent for deployment and monitoring

What makes this exciting

You'll solve data problems most teams never get to touch, work at real scale, and grow from picking up early models into owning what comes next — with every gain helping nonprofits raise more for the causes they serve.
