The Nurse Scientist advances nursing research and evidence-based practice (EBP) across Wellstar Health System by fostering scientific inquiry and guiding scholarly projects. The Nurse Scientist will act as a leader, mentor, and champion for ensuring clinical nursing practice at WHS is guided by the strongest evidence, and the nursing profession is shaped by Wellstar nurses through the generation of new knowledge. Activities will include participation and leadership on the system Nursing Innovation Council and hospital-based innovation and practice councils, designing and leading nursing research studies, mentoring and educating nurses on the design and conduct of nursing research and EBP projects, and offering expert consultation on various system- and hospital-level initiatives.


Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1 Facilitation of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), Quality Improvement (QI), & Research
a. Facilitates clinical inquiry to advance nursing practice through EBP, QI, and research
b. Provides consultation and guidance for implementation and analysis of EBP and QI clinical projects and research.
c. Recommends dissemination opportunities for EBP, QI and research projects as podium and/or poster presentations at the academic institution and other external opportunities.
d. Facilitates nursing research in partnership with clinical nurses to generate new knowledge, add to a current body of knowledge through replication studies, and scholarly work which also includes dissemination of results.
2 Nursing Innovation Council Collaboration
a. Reviews, recommend revisions, edits, and supports readiness to submit EBP, QI, and research projects to move forward to Institutional Review Board (IRB) review.
b. Submission guidance to Wellstar IRB and academic institutions IRB as appropriate.
c. Participates in forums, as requested, aligned with innovation work, EBP, QI, and research.
3. Critical Inquiry, Communication, and Knowledge Skills and Professional Role Characteristics
a. Facilitates and guides nurses in purposive thinking and reflective reasoning (Critical Inquiry) to help nurses examine various ideas, assumptions, principles, conclusions, beliefs, and actions in the context of their practice.
b. Role models professional nursing practice thru behaviors, communication, clinical knowledge, and practice.
c. Mentors nurses in understanding professional nurses responsibilities to advance nursing practice and the profession.
d. Holds research, EBP, and QI team members accountable for project work.
e. Participation in forums as needed aligned with innovation, EBP, and research.
f. Provides update on work to designated WHS leader designee and escalates issues, concerns, and barriers to advancing work when they occur.
Performs other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Education:

  • Doctorate Nursing

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - Amer Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor

  • RN - Reg Nurse (Single State) or RN-COMPACT - RN - Multi-state Compact

Required Minimum Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years of nursing research experience is required; PhD dissertation experience is acceptable to meet this requirement.

Use of methodologies supporting quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research within the last 12 months required.

A minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience is preferred.

Teaching experience in a baccalaureate nursing program or higher is preferred.
