How much do quality manager jobs pay per year?
What does a quality manager do?
As a quality manager, your job is to oversee Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) for each product or service assigned to you. Your duties include guaranteeing products and services meet the standards of your organization, keeping management aware of any problems with production, and ensuring that the manufacturing process goes as smoothly as possible. This job has different aspects depending on where a product or service is in the development cycle. Products that are still being designed need QA to make creation as smooth as possible, while released products require QC to ensure the expected level of quality is maintained.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality manager, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges quality managers face when implementing new quality standards across teams?
What is the difference between Quality Manager vs Quality Supervisor?
| Aspect | Quality Manager |
|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in quality assurance, engineering, or related field; certifications like ASQ CQE or Six Sigma are common. |
|---|---|
| Work Environment | Oversees multiple teams or departments, strategic planning, and process improvement initiatives. |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used across manufacturing, healthcare, and service industries to lead quality programs. |
| Common Search & Comparison | Often compared with Quality Supervisor due to overlapping responsibilities and career progression. |
The main difference between a Quality Manager and a Quality Supervisor lies in their scope and responsibilities. A Quality Manager focuses on strategic quality initiatives, process improvements, and managing teams at a higher level, often requiring advanced certifications. In contrast, a Quality Supervisor typically oversees daily operations, supervises staff directly, and implements quality procedures. Both roles are essential in maintaining quality standards, but the manager role involves broader planning and leadership functions.

Job description
The Lead Quality Manager is responsible for the effectiveness of the Quality Management System for the Lincoln facility while serving as the functional quality leader for BURNDY New Hampshire Operations. This dual role provides direct leadership for Lincoln Quality and leads alignment, standardization, performance improvement, and talent development across Littleton, Manchester, and Londonderry. The role ensures compliance with ISO 9001, UL, CSA, NUPIC, customer, regulatory, and company requirements while partnering cross-functionally to reduce risk, prevent defects, improve customer satisfaction, and advance operational excellence.
Primary location: Lincoln, New Hampshire. Role scope: Quality Manager for Lincoln and functional quality lead for three additional New Hampshire sites. Travel: periodic business travel, up to 35%.
A Day In The Life
Every day at Hubbell is different and you'll contribute in many ways. On any given day, you'll make a difference by:
• Leading the Lincoln Quality organization and maintaining controlled procedures, work instructions, records, quality objectives, inspection systems, product release, and nonconforming material disposition.
• Providing functional leadership, mentoring, and guidance to Quality Managers, Quality Engineers, Supervisors, Auditors, Technicians, Inspectors, and other quality personnel across New Hampshire operations.
• Establishing standardized quality systems, metrics, problem-solving expectations, best practices, and performance reviews across all four New Hampshire sites.
• Supporting implementation and sustainment of the Hubbell Manufacturing System by leading Quality compliance, identifying gaps, coordinating corrective actions, and verifying ongoing adherence.
• Preparing for and leading registrar, customer, internal, supplier, and external audits; ensuring findings are addressed with timely, effective corrective and preventative actions.
• Proactively assuming leadership for quality issues and escalations by driving containment, root cause analysis, ownership, communication, verification of effectiveness, and recurrence prevention.
• Managing customer complaints, warranty performance, supplier quality issues, quality risk assessments, quality planning, FMEAs, Control Plans, process capability, MSA, and change-control activities.
• Reviewing and monitoring Engineering Change Notifications to ensure approved changes are flowed down and incorporated into drawings, specifications, procedures, work instructions, inspection plans, Control Plans, and other controlled documents.
• Developing, approving, and maintaining NPD and product transfer quality plans so inspection, testing, measurement, documentation, CTQ, and launch-readiness requirements are defined before production release.
• Ensuring Critical to Quality characteristics are identified for applicable parts and part families and incorporated into drawings, specifications, PFMEAs, Control Plans, quality plans, inspection plans, and work instructions.
• Analyzing quality data, trends, Pareto results, customer PPM, internal nonconformances, supplier performance, scrap, First Pass Yield, Cost of Poor Quality, audit performance, and corrective action effectiveness.
• Managing and developing the Quality team through recruiting, onboarding, work direction, coaching, performance management, succession planning, recognition, accountability, and career development.
What will help you thrive in this role?
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Science, Business, Industrial Technology, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum seven years of progressive quality experience, including at least three years leading quality functions in an ISO 9001-certified manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead site quality operations and influence teams, priorities, and quality performance across multiple locations.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001, root cause analysis, corrective action, risk assessment, internal auditing, supplier quality, SPC, calibration, inspection systems, and QMS documentation.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, engineering sketches, specifications, and technical documents and translate requirements into practical inspection and process controls.
- Experience with UL, CSA, NUPIC, APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, Control Plans, MSA, process capability, Lean Six Sigma, SAP QM, Power BI, or ASQ certification preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication, facilitation, data analysis, organizational, decision-making, conflict-resolution, and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to maintain accurate records, analyze data, write clear procedures and reports, and travel periodically up to 35%.
