SUMMARY:
Sustaining Engineer I is a technical role responsible for driving product continuity and manufacturing excellence through a balance of design engineering and technical documentation for electromechanical designs solutions for stationary, mobile, and wearable data acquisition and payment products. This position provides Level 3 technical support by collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders, including contract manufacturers and vendors, to resolve production challenges. A key aspect of this role is the integration of product engineering elements-such as design optimization, 3D modeling, and prototyping-with the usage of engineering change orders (ECOs) and test plans. The successful candidate will ensure that electromechanical products are not only technically sound and optimized for performance but also supported by high-quality documentation that meets all specifications throughout the production lifecycle.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as the Level 3 technical point of contact for contract manufacturers (CMs) and vendors to resolve production bottlenecks and permit products to reach or continue manufacturing.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for production failures or component defects and develop effective Corrective Action Plans.
  • Support the Lead Engineer with design, prototyping, and documentation tasks in SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, including modifying 3D models and updating 2D drawings for existing product lines.
  • Lead the documentation process for Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) by obtaining necessary data, generating change notifications, and managing the formal release workflow.
  • Assist w/ generating, reviewing, and executing detailed test plans to validate design changes or to troubleshoot vendor-supplied component issues.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to engineering drawings to ensure clear communication of requirements to external vendors.
  • Use basic hand tools to perform physical inspections, basic prototyping, or testing components received from suppliers.
  • Maintain organized technical documentation and project files within Windows environments and the Microsoft Office Suite to support quality audits.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience: 1-2 years of experience in a mechanical, electro-mechanical, or quality engineering environment, including relevant internships.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Understanding of manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, die casting, machining, and metal forming.
  • Design Principles: Ability to apply DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) to allow for cost-effective production of components and serviceability.
  • Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of GD&T and industry-standard documentation practices.
  • Technical Methods: Exposure to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and the development of Corrective Action Plans.
  • Practical Skills: Ability to use basic hand tools and measurement equipment for part verification.
  • Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks, Windows Operating Systems, and the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Communication: Technical writing skills and the ability to professionally interface with external vendors and contract manufacturers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Basic programming skills, specifically with Python or Arduino, for automating test sequences or developing simple data collection tools.
  • Experience in a Product Engineering environment with an emphasis on iterative design and prototyping.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
  • Ability to perform light lifting of up to 25 pounds, primarily for handling product prototypes, tooling, or small components during testing and inspection.
