The Quality Control (QC) Inspector is responsible for performing inspection activities to verify conformance of materials, components, and processes to applicable codes, standards, procurement documents, and internal quality requirements. This role serves as a key function in ensuring dimensional accuracy, material traceability, and compliance with applicable regulatory and quality program requirements, including ASME and NQA-1.

The QC Inspector operates within defined procedures and documented instructions and supports production, engineering, and quality assurance functions to prevent nonconforming conditions and ensure product integrity.

The QC Inspector performs inspection and test activities on safety-related, non-safety related with special treatment, and other designated items in accordance with approved procedures and instructions.

Activities include, but are not limited to:

• Inspection and verification of mechanical components, fabrication, and assemblies
• Review of inspection/test documentation and acceptance records
• Verification of compliance with drawings, specifications, and code requirements
• Participation in quality system activities including audits, corrective actions, and process improvements

• Perform inspections and tests in accordance with approved procedures, drawings, and acceptance criteria
• Document inspection and test results clearly and accurately
• Identify, document, and report nonconforming conditions
• Witness and verify work activities when required by governing documents
• Maintain complete and traceable quality records
• Support process reporting and continuous improvement initiatives

Consistent with qualification expectations, inspectors must be capable of performing and documenting inspections in accordance with procedures and standards.

• Review Certified Material Test Reports (CMTRs/MTRs) for compliance with procurement and code requirements
• Verify heat/lot traceability to drawings and purchase orders
• Perform receiving inspections and document acceptance status
• Segregate and control nonconforming materialsDevelop and maintain inspection plans and travelers

• Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, gauges, CMM systems)
• Verify conformance to dimensional tolerances and GD&T requirements
• Generate inspection reports, including First Article Inspection (FAI) documentation
• Conduct visual inspections for workmanship, fit-up, and weld conformance

• Verify welding documentation including WPS, PQR, and welder qualifications
• Confirm traceability of welds and associated materials
• Support or witness qualification activities as required
• Verify compliance with applicable welding codes and standards

• Participate in internal and supplier audits
• Support or lead Nonconformance Reports (NCR) and Corrective/Preventive Actions (CAPA)
• Perform root cause analysis and verification of corrective actions

• Verify calibration status of inspection and test equipment prior to use
• Maintain control of gauges, fixtures, and measurement systems
• Coordinate calibration activities with external providers
• Support measurement system analysis (e.g., gage R&R)

• Maintain accurate, legible, and complete inspection/test records
• Ensure records meet quality program requirements for traceability and retention
• Support documentation required for certification and qualification records

Minimum qualifications shall be consistent with applicable inspection personnel requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent (minimum baseline requirement)
• Relevant inspection or testing experience in applicable disciplines

Typical experience levels:

• Level I: Entry-level with basic training and supervised experience
• Level II: Demonstrated capability in inspection planning, execution, and evaluation
• Level III (if applicable): Advanced capability including evaluation of procedures and personnel

These levels align with defined capability expectations for inspection personnel.

• Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and procedures
• Working knowledge of dimensional metrology and inspection techniques
• Understanding of material traceability and documentation requirements
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME, NQA-1)
• Ability to evaluate inspection results and determine acceptability

• Personnel shall be trained, qualified, and certified in accordance with applicable quality procedures
• Certification is based on education, experience, training, and demonstrated capabilityCertification validity period and recertification requirements shall comply with program procedures

• Ability to perform inspection activities including visual acuity and color differentiation
• Capability to stand, walk, and perform shop-floor inspections for extended periods
• Ability to handle and measure components safely

Annual vision examinations and physical capability requirements shall be met for certification.

The QC Inspector:

• Has authority to identify, segregate and document nonconforming conditions
• Interfaces with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality Assurance
• Supports certification, audit, and compliance activities
• Operates under the direction of Quality Control and Quality Assurance leadership

• Accuracy and completeness of inspection records
• Effectiveness in identifying and preventing nonconformances
• Adherence to procedures and quality program requirements
