What is a QM?

QMs, or Quartermasters, are professionals responsible for overseeing the supply, distribution, and management of equipment and provisions in organizations such as the military, maritime vessels, or large institutions. Their primary duties often include inventory control, procurement, and ensuring that essential supplies are available and maintained. In the military, Quartermasters play a key role in logistics, helping to ensure troops have the necessary gear, food, and materials for their missions. On ships, QMs may also be responsible for navigation and maintaining course. The specific responsibilities can vary depending on the branch or organization.

How does a Quality Manager typically collaborate with production and engineering teams to ensure product quality?

A Quality Manager works closely with both production and engineering teams to establish quality standards, monitor manufacturing processes, and address any issues that arise during production. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review quality metrics, sharing feedback from audits, and jointly developing corrective actions. By fostering open communication and a continuous improvement mindset, the QM helps ensure that product quality meets or exceeds customer expectations while minimizing defects and inefficiencies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quartermaster, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quartermaster, you need a solid understanding of logistics, inventory management, and supply chain operations, often supported by relevant military or supply management training. Familiarity with inventory tracking systems, logistics software, and standard operating procedures is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing resources and coordinating with team members. These skills ensure the timely and efficient distribution of supplies, which is critical for operational success and mission readiness.

The role of a Qm (Quality Manager) typically involves overseeing quality assurance processes, ensuring compliance with standards, and implementing quality improvements within an organization. While both roles focus on quality, a Quality Manager often has broader responsibilities, including strategic planning and team management. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers identify the right fit for their needs.

Job description

SAP PP/QM Consultant
Location: San Jose / Santa Clara, CA
Duration: [6–12 months, extendable]

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced SAP PP/QM Consultant to support a manufacturing technology initiative for our client, Quantumscape, a leading developer of next-generation solid-state battery technology based in California. This role will focus on configuring, supporting, and optimizing SAP Production Planning (PP) and Quality Management (QM) modules to support advanced manufacturing, pilot line, and scale-up production processes in a high-growth, innovation-driven environment.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on SAP PP/QM experience within discrete or process manufacturing, ideally in battery, semiconductor, automotive, or advanced materials industries, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment supporting new product introduction and production ramp-up.
Key Responsibilities
• Gather business requirements and translate them into SAP PP and QM configuration and solution design.
• Configure and support core PP functions: material master (MRP views), BOMs, work centers/resources, routings, production versions, MRP, capacity planning, production orders, and repetitive/process manufacturing.
• Configure and support QM functions: inspection plans, inspection lots, quality notifications, sampling procedures, results recording, certificates of analysis, and integration with PP/MM/SD.
• Support integration of PP/QM with MM, SD, PM, and shop floor/MES systems (e.g., Werum, Camstar, or custom MES) relevant to battery cell/module manufacturing.
• Partner with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to design solutions supporting pilot line and gigafactory-scale production.
• Lead or support end-to-end testing (unit, integration, UAT), cutover activities, and post-go-live stabilization.
• Develop functional specifications for custom developments, reports, interfaces, and enhancements (working with ABAP developers as needed).
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective configuration or process changes.
• Support master data governance for materials, BOMs, and routings in a rapidly evolving manufacturing environment.
• Create and maintain documentation: functional specs, test scripts, training materials, and SOPs.
• Provide end-user training and support for production planners, quality engineers, and shop floor personnel.
• Stay current with SAP roadmap (S/4HANA) and recommend process improvements aligned with best practices.
Required Qualifications
• 12+ years of hands-on SAP PP and QM configuration experience, including at least 2 full-cycle implementations.
• Strong understanding of discrete and/or process manufacturing processes; experience in battery, semiconductor, electronics, or automotive manufacturing strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in SAP PP: MRP, capacity planning, BOM/routing management, production orders, and repetitive manufacturing.
• Proficiency in SAP QM: inspection planning, quality notifications, in-process/incoming/outgoing inspection, and sampling procedures.
• Experience integrating PP/QM with MM, SD, and MES/shop floor systems.
• Solid understanding of SAP S/4HANA (preferred) or ECC PP/QM.
• Ability to write functional specifications and collaborate effectively with technical (ABAP) teams.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience working directly with manufacturing and quality stakeholders in a plant/production environment.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred Qualifications
• SAP S/4HANA Manufacturing certification.
• Experience with battery cell/module/pack manufacturing processes.
• Familiarity with SAP Digital Manufacturing Cloud (DMC), MES integration, or Manufacturing Execution Systems.
• Experience with SAP QM in regulated or highly quality-controlled environments (automotive, aerospace, energy storage).
• Knowledge of SAP PP-PI (Process Industries) for chemical/materials processes.
• Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and production scale-up.
