What is a QA engineer?

QA Engineers, or Quality Assurance Engineers, are professionals responsible for ensuring that software products meet established quality standards before they are released to customers. They design and execute tests, identify bugs or issues, and work closely with development teams to resolve problems. QA Engineers play a crucial role in the software development lifecycle by preventing defects, improving product reliability, and ensuring a smooth user experience. Their work may involve manual testing, automated testing, and creating test documentation.

What does a QA engineer do?

As a QA engineer, you monitor the development process and design troubleshooting tests to ensure software or manufacturing materials have no significant issues. If your tests identify problems with the software, you then send the review and feedback to the product design team so they can make plans to debug the software and return it to you for further testing. Your duties include designing various tests, scenarios, and scripts to assess whether or not a piece of software is ready for release. You also track and document your findings using a bug tracking system and participate in design review meetings to provide reports on your results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QA Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming or scripting knowledge, and familiarity with quality assurance methodologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help QA Engineers identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality software products that meet user requirements and business goals.

How does a QA engineer typically collaborate with developers and other team members during the software development lifecycle?

QA Engineers work closely with developers, product managers, and sometimes UX/UI designers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in sprint planning meetings, provide input on testability during requirements discussions, and collaborate with developers to understand new features and identify potential issues early. Regular communication helps ensure that quality standards are met and bugs are addressed promptly, resulting in a more efficient release process and higher-quality products. This collaborative environment also provides QA Engineers with opportunities to expand their technical knowledge and grow within the team.

What is the difference between Qa Engineer vs Software Tester?

AspectQa EngineerSoftware Tester
CertificationsISTQB, CSTE, CSQAISTQB, CSQA (optional)
Work EnvironmentInvolved in automation, process improvement, and quality strategyPrimarily manual testing and test case execution
ResponsibilitiesDesigning test plans, automation, defect analysis, quality assuranceExecuting test cases, reporting bugs, verifying fixes
Industry UsageUsed across software development companies, especially in Agile and DevOpsCommon in traditional and Agile environments

The main difference between a Qa Engineer and a Software Tester lies in their scope and responsibilities. Qa Engineers typically focus on automation, quality processes, and strategic testing, while Software Testers mainly perform manual testing and bug reporting. Both roles are essential for ensuring software quality, but Qa Engineers often have a broader role in quality assurance and process improvement.

Are QA engineers paid well?

QA engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, but with skills in automation tools and testing frameworks, salaries tend to increase significantly for experienced professionals. Overall, QA engineering is considered a well-paying role within the tech industry.

Is QA engineer a stressful job?

A QA engineer's job can be stressful during tight deadlines, bug fixes, or complex testing scenarios, but it often involves structured processes and collaboration. The level of stress varies depending on the company, project scope, and workload, and skills in time management and communication can help manage pressure.

Job description

Job Description
The Team:
The Programming, EIO(Ethernet Input/Output)/HWIO (Hardware Input/Output) Systems Engineering team is responsible for making sure GM's software-programmable controllers and Ethernet I/O devices can be reliably programmed and interacted with throughout the vehicle lifecycle, from development to in-field updates.
We define and validate how controllers sense, actuate, and diagnose hardware I/O, own key system specifications and test content that ensure I/O performance and diagnostics behave correctly, and develop the common infrastructure (I/O mapping, controller hardware requirements, and validation procedures) that is reused across SDV programs. Working closely with diagnostics, architecture, safety, and software implementation teams, we provide the technical foundation that enables safe, robust over-the-air and on-vehicle software updates and consistent I/O behavior across GM's global vehicle portfolio.
The Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Sr. SQA Engineer to join our team, focusing on the next generation of vehicle software validation and automation. The successful candidate will lead, develop, and execute test automation strategies, drive department-wide improvements, and collaborate across business sectors to ensure the highest standards of quality and reliability in our systems. This role requires technical leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on execution to deliver validation excellence and support program milestones. This role supports a hybrid work arrangement, requiring onsite presence at least three days per week.
The successful candidate will leverage CI/CD methodologies with GitHub Actions and Jenkins pipelines, utilize AI-enabled test automation tools, and perform advanced validation infrastructure tasks such as running HIL benches, flashing controllers, analyzing PCAP traffic, and executing pipelines to dissect test results.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
  • Lead cross functional workgroups to understand test requirements and develop comprehensive test plans.
  • Develop and maintain test scripts using Python for Controller Hardware & Programming, leverage the latest library/helper/wrapper functions, and align with department strategy.
  • Execute test scripts and analyze test results to identify defects, performance issues, and areas for improvement.
  • Manage the team backlog and define priority for implementation.
  • Collaborate with cross functional workgroups to ensure test environment is properly set up.
  • Work closely with software developers and system engineers to ensure test coverage and validate system functionality.
  • Participate in test automation framework development and enhancement activities.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and escalate issues timely.
  • Ability to independently investigate issues based on limited information, demonstrating high analytical ability to resolve complex problems.
  • Collaborate with the team to continuously improve test processes, methodologies, and tools.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices in test automation and contribute to the adoption of new technologies and techniques.
  • Travel as required to support fulfillment of objectives.
  • Develop and maintain test scripts that match test cases, leverage the latest library/helper/wrapper functions, and align with department strategy.
  • Co-create and validate helper/wrapper functions, sharing best practices across the department.
  • Execute and support validation activities on HIL benches, including setup, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Flash controllers and validate software deployments across development and test environments.
  • Perform PCAP analysis and network traffic investigations to support software validation and root cause analysis.
  • Execute and monitor CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Jenkins.
  • Perform hands-on test execution, analyze results, and provide detailed failure analysis and test result dissection.
  • Develop and utilize AI-powered tools and automation solutions to improve testing efficiency and quality metrics.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in developing and executing test scripts using Python.
  • Familiarity with automotive protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and diagnostic protocols (e.g., UDS).
  • Experience with test automation frameworks and tools (HIL/SOLE/Jenkins, Pipeline).
  • Experience executing software validation activities on HIL, SOLE, and related automation platforms.
  • Experience flashing controllers and analyzing PCAP files to troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience executing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Jenkins.
  • Experience developing or utilizing AI-assisted engineering tools and workflows.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and mechatronic infrastructure systems, including Ethernet, CAN, LIN, HWIO, and power management.
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycles and testing methodologies.

People Skills:
