Python Pyvisa information

What is a Python PyVISA developer?

A Python PyVISA developer is a software professional who specializes in using the PyVISA library to control and automate measurement instruments, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators, through Python programming. PyVISA is an open-source Python package that provides a convenient interface to communicate with instruments via GPIB, USB, Serial, Ethernet, and other interfaces following the VISA standard. Developers in this role typically write scripts or applications to acquire, process, and analyze data from laboratory instruments, often for research, testing, or manufacturing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python PyVISA engineer?

To thrive as a Python PyVISA Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of instrument control protocols (such as GPIB, USB, and serial), and relevant engineering or technical education. Familiarity with the PyVISA library, experience using laboratory instrumentation, and knowledge of test automation frameworks are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help you troubleshoot issues and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure reliable automation, efficient instrument integration, and accurate data collection in research and development environments.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working with Python PyVISA for instrument automation?

Engineers using Python PyVISA for instrument automation often encounter challenges such as managing communication timeouts, handling diverse instrument command sets, and troubleshooting connectivity issues with different interfaces (GPIB, USB, Ethernet). Ensuring reliable data transfer and synchronizing commands between multiple instruments can require careful coding and thorough testing. Collaborating closely with hardware teams and understanding the specific requirements of each device are key to successful automation projects.

What is the difference between Python Pyvisa vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectPython PyvisaTest Automation Engineer
Required SkillsPython programming, instrument control, hardware interfacingProgramming, testing frameworks, automation tools
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, R&D, hardware testingSoftware development, testing labs, QA teams
Industry UsageElectronics, instrumentation, researchSoftware, manufacturing, quality assurance

Python Pyvisa focuses on controlling laboratory instruments via Python, often used in research and hardware testing. Test Automation Engineers develop and implement automated testing processes across software and hardware systems. While both roles involve automation and programming, Python Pyvisa is specialized in instrument control, whereas Test Automation Engineers work broadly in testing frameworks and quality assurance across industries.

Precise Systems delivers integrated, mission-ready solutions that advance warfighter readiness and strengthen our nation’s most critical defense programs. Through the power of our combined capabilities, we provide deep expertise in Advanced Engineering; Digital Transformation; Electromagnetic Warfare; Interactive Training & Simulation; Physical Sciences Research; Platform Lifecycle Support; and Foreign Military Sales. Unified by decades of trusted performance and expanded through strategic growth, our team applies innovative technologies, engineering rigor, and customer-focused execution to solve complex challenges and accelerate mission success. Guided by our commitment to partnership, precision, and performance, we deliver the scalable solutions and technical excellence our customers depend on—today and into the future.

We are seeking an Aerospace Systems Engineer who will lead the design, integration, verification, and support of single board computer (SBC) and ATE solutions for safety‑critical aerospace and defense applications in rugged environments. This role requires hands‑on systems engineering across electronics, mechanical packaging, cable/harness design, software coordination, and qualification testing to ensure reliable operation under extreme environmental and mission conditions. The Systems Engineer will lead the development, integration, verification, and sustainment of automated test equipment (ATE) used for aerospace development and production environments.

This role requires in‑person support.

Duties
  • Own system‑level requirements for SBC‑based avionics or embedded computing platforms and Automated Test Systems.
  • Translate customer, program, and certification needs into technical specifications, interface control documents, and verification plans.
  • Lead architecture definition for ruggedized compute modules, including processor boards, power interfaces, memory, I/O, thermal management, and enclosure integration.
  • Coordinate cross‑functional design efforts across electronics, mechanical, firmware/software, cable/harness, and manufacturing teams.
  • Define system‑level requirements for automated test equipment, test stations, fixtures, and support hardware.
  • Lead design and integration of test solutions for electronic assemblies, electro‑mechanical subassemblies, cables, harnesses, and complete systems.
  • Evaluate and select test equipment, instruments, connectors, fixturing, and environmental interfaces.
  • Support hardware/software integration for test systems, including instrumentation, data acquisition, control logic, and automated test scripts.
  • Support trade studies for component selection, form factor, power budget, thermal performance, obsolescence, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Support failure analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective action implementation.
  • Plan and execute verification and validation activities, including analysis, inspection, test, and demonstration.
  • Support qualification testing for vibration, shock, thermal cycling, humidity, EMI/EMC, altitude, and other aerospace environmental conditions.
  • Participate in design reviews, configuration control boards, and program technical reviews.
  • Work with software teams to define boot, operating system, driver, middleware, diagnostics, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Ensure traceability from requirements through implementation, test, and acceptance.
  • Support supplier management, hardware procurement, and production readiness for rugged SBC assemblies.
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field.
Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in aerospace, defense, or other safety‑critical embedded systems development.
  • Experience with safety‑critical standards and aerospace qualification practices.
  • Ability to read schematics, interface drawings, mechanical layouts, and test reports.
  • Knowledge of configuration management, requirements management, and verification traceability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with automated test software development using Python, C++, LabVIEW, TestStand, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with SCPI, VISA, PyVISA, Ethernet, CAN, RS‑422/485, SPI, or similar interfaces.
  • Familiarity with DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑810, MIL‑STD‑461, ARP4754A, ARP4761, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with PCB design workflows, connector selection, and high‑reliability harnessing.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity, secure boot, or software assurance for embedded systems.
  • Prior experience supporting low‑rate initial production or full‑rate production transitions.
  • Experience with hardware‑in‑the‑loop systems, functional test, acceptance test, or burn‑in test.
