Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating tests with complex hardware, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with rigorous automotive safety standards like ISO 26262. To address these, it’s essential to maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams, regularly update test strategies to accommodate hardware changes, and utilize automated testing tools to improve efficiency. Continuous learning about new automotive technologies and safety protocols also helps in staying ahead of industry requirements.

What does an Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineer do?

An Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineer is responsible for verifying and validating the software that runs on electronic control units (ECUs) in vehicles. They design and execute test cases to ensure that embedded software meets safety, performance, and regulatory requirements. Their work involves using specialized tools to simulate real-world automotive scenarios, identifying bugs or issues, and collaborating with development teams to resolve them. This role is crucial for ensuring that automotive systems—such as braking, infotainment, and engine control—operate reliably and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Automotive Software Testing Engineer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, software testing methodologies, and automotive standards such as ISO 26262, typically supported by a degree in computer science, electronics, or a related field. Familiarity with testing tools (such as CANoe, Vector tools), scripting languages (like Python), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is commonly required, along with relevant certifications like ISTQB. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and ensuring thorough test coverage. These competencies are essential for delivering reliable, safe, and high-quality automotive software in compliance with stringent industry regulations.

Sr. SW Quality Technical Validation & Data Systems Engineer

Engineering | Casa Grande, AZ|  Full-Time

About Lucid

At Lucid, we are creating an electric future without compromise. That means refusing to choose between performance and sustainability, design and engineering, ambition and integrity. We build world-class vehicles by pushing performance, efficiency, and design beyond industry limits, setting new standards with vehicles like Lucid Air and Lucid Gravity.
The people here, engineers, designers, operators, and builders, came from across industries and around the world because they wanted to work on a harder problem. They care deeply about mastering their craft and delivering work they are proud of.

The Role

We are seeking a Sr. SW Quality Technical Validation & Data Systems Engineer focused on software issue evaluation, hands-on log and data analysis, signal monitoring, bench-based validation, and targeted product validation support. This role collects and analyzes logs, cloud data, PCAP traces, CAN data, diagnostics, vehicle signals, and validation results to identify issue patterns, support root cause analysis, and provide actionable findings to Software Development and Validation teams.

Mission

Improve software quality through technical data analysis, signal-based monitoring, bench validation, targeted product validation support, and engineering collaboration.

What Success Looks Like (First 12 Months)

  • Higher issue reproduction rates and reduced time-to-root-cause for priority software issues.
  • Signal-monitoring dashboards proactively surfacing recurring failure patterns.
  • Evidence-backed fix validation with fewer escaped and regressed defects.
  • Validation findings supporting release-quality decisions.
  • Engineering-ready investigation packages adopted for gate reviews.

What You'll Own

  • Software Issue Evaluation & Investigation
  • Product Validation & Fix Verification
  • Test Bench Development & Issue Reproduction
  • Signal Monitoring & Dashboard Development
  • Software Validation & Automation Collaboration
  • Engineering Collaboration & Root Cause Support
  • Data Quality & Telemetry Improvements
  • Quality Gates & Technical Reporting

What You Bring

Required

  • 7+ years of automotive software validation, embedded software testing, diagnostics, software quality, system integration, or related technical roles.
  • Hands-on experience with product validation, regression testing, release acceptance testing, and software validation.
  • Hands-on experience collecting and analyzing vehicle logs, cloud telemetry, PCAP, CAN data, DTCs, DIDs, and diagnostic information.
  • Understanding of vehicle networks, ECU communication, CAN/Ethernet signal behavior, diagnostics, and software release validation.
  • Experience with test benches, HIL-style environments, or vehicle simulation environments.
  • Proficiency with Python, SQL, CAN DBC/signal databases, Grafana, InfluxDB, or Prometheus.

Collaboration & Execution Qualifications

  • Strong collaboration with Software Development, Validation, Diagnostics, Cloud, Automation, and Quality teams.
  • Ability to explain technical findings through data evidence and concise issue summaries.
  • Strong ownership mindset and cross-functional execution capability.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Experience in automotive software validation, embedded systems debugging, vehicle diagnostics, test automation, or technical data analysis environments.
  • Equivalent hands-on experience will be strongly considered.

Work Requirement

This role requires close collaboration with Software Development, Software Validation, Diagnostics, Cloud Systems, Automation, and Quality teams.
