What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, software testing methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages like C/C++ or Python, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with test automation frameworks, hardware debugging tools, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure robust and reliable embedded products by enabling precise identification and resolution of defects throughout the development lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Test Engineers when verifying embedded systems, and how can they be addressed?

Embedded Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited visibility into system behavior, hardware-software integration issues, and timing constraints unique to embedded devices. To address these, engineers typically use specialized debugging tools, simulators, and hardware-in-the-loop setups to observe and validate system performance. Effective communication with hardware and firmware teams is crucial to quickly resolve issues. Additionally, staying updated on testing frameworks and automation tools can help streamline verification processes and improve test coverage.

What are Embedded Test Engineers?

Embedded Test Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and execute tests for embedded systems—specialized computing systems that are part of larger devices, such as cars, medical devices, or consumer electronics. Their main responsibility is to ensure that the hardware and software components of these systems function correctly and reliably. They create test plans, automate test cases, identify bugs, and work closely with development teams to resolve issues. By thoroughly testing embedded systems, they help guarantee product safety, quality, and performance before the product goes to market.

What is the difference between Embedded Test Engineer vs Firmware Test Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Test EngineerFirmware Test Engineer
CertificationsRelevant certifications like ISTQB, embedded systems coursesSimilar certifications, often with firmware or embedded systems focus
Work EnvironmentEmbedded hardware and software testing in embedded systemsTesting firmware within embedded devices or systems
Industry UsageElectronics, automotive, consumer devicesConsumer electronics, IoT, embedded systems
Search & ComparisonOften compared due to overlapping skills in embedded systems testingRelated but more firmware-specific

Embedded Test Engineers focus on testing both hardware and software components of embedded systems, ensuring integration and functionality. Firmware Test Engineers specialize in testing the firmware that runs on embedded devices, often working closely with developers to validate code. While both roles require knowledge of embedded systems, the Embedded Test Engineer has a broader scope including hardware testing, whereas the Firmware Test Engineer concentrates on firmware validation.

Job description

Moog is a performance culture that empowers people to achieve great things. Our people enjoy solving interesting technical challenges in a culture where everyone trusts each other to do the right thing. For you, working with us can mean deeper job satisfaction, better rewards, and a great quality of life inside and outside of work.
Job Title:
Sr. Test Engineer
Reporting To:
Management, Design Engineering
Work Schedule:
Onsite - Phoenix, AZ
Mission & Impact
Join a team that designs the Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) and Test Scripts that validate our spacecraft avionics before they fly. You'll own test solutions end-to-end-hardware, software, documentation, and testing -and see your work directly contribute to mission readiness and customer acceptance.
If you bring strong LabVIEW, C, Python and hands-on test hardware design experience, we'll train you on Moog's niche tools and power architectures (e.g., Intercept Mozaix, EPS).
You do not need every preferred skill to apply; strong candidates typically meet ~80% and show willingness to learn.
What You'll Do
  • Design & build EGSE for spacecraft avionics: select COTS instruments, design custom test boxes/panels, and develop cabling/harnesses.
  • Develop test software: build LabVIEW UIs/VIs for instrument control and telemetry; author automation scripts in Python and/or Perl; integrate with embedded test code (VxWorks/C).
  • Integrate with flight-like units: interface with embedded single board computers (SBCs) and custom analog/digital I/O for Command & Data Handling (C&DH); support EPS/power switching use cases.
  • Author formal test documentation: Integration & Test Plans, Environmental Test Plans, Acceptance Test Procedures (ATPs), and configuration-controlled schematics/BOMs.
  • Execute & improve: run test campaigns (functional, environmental), troubleshoot anomalies, drive root cause/corrective actions, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: partner with systems, firmware, manufacturing test, and program management to meet schedule, cost, and technical goals.

Must-Have Qualifications (Core)
  • 7+ years in aerospace/defense test engineering with hands-on ownership of EGSE hardware + software + documentation.
  • Proficiency in the following coding languages:
    • LabVIEW - building production-grade instrument control and operator UIs.
    • C - embedded systems.
    • Python and/or Perl - test automation and data handling.
  • Practical experience selecting/integrating COTS instruments (PSUs, loads, DAQ, scopes) and designing custom test fixtures/cable assemblies.
  • Ability to write clear ATPs/I&T plans and maintain accurate schematics/parts lists.
  • Strong debugging skills across analog/digital interfaces; comfortable reading schematics and interpreting telemetry.
  • U.S. person (due to export-controlled work).

Note: While the legacy posting listed 7-10 years, we welcome 5+ years if you demonstrate full EGSE lifecycle ownership and strong cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Nice-to-Have (We Will Train Where Needed)
  • Familiarity with VxWorks on embedded SBCs.
  • Experience with cPCI SBCs and C&DH architectures.
  • Exposure to EPS backplanes (power switching, solar array/battery management).
  • VHDL/FPGA interface testing.
  • Cable/harness design experience and knowledge of best practices (EMI/EMC, shielding/grounding).
  • Experience with Intercept Mozaix (or similar) for schematic/BOM/document control.
  • Environmental test support (thermal-vac, vibe, EMI/EMC).

Growth & Development
  • Structured onboarding with mentorship and exposure to multiple spacecraft programs.
  • Targeted training on Moog-specific tools/architectures (Intercept Mozaix, EPS power switching) and advanced LabVIEW frameworks.
  • Clear technical progression toward lead/architect EGSE roles and mentoring responsibilities.

How we care for you:
  • Financial Rewards: great compensation package, annual profit sharing, matching 401k and the ability to participate in Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts
  • Work/Life Balance: Flexible paid time off, holidays and parental leave program, relocation assistance
  • Health & Welfare: Comprehensive insurance coverage including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, Employee Assistance Plan ("EAP") and other supplemental benefit coverages
  • Professional Skills Development: Tuition Assistance, mentorship and coaching opportunities, leadership development and other personal growth programs
  • Collaborative and Welcoming Workplace: Inclusive culture rooted in our values, enhanced by Employee Resource Groups, and team-building activities.
  • Additional site-specific benefits may be offered
