How much do pure math jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for pure math in the United States is $24.17, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $27.40 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are pure mathematicians?

Pure mathematicians are professionals who study mathematics for its own sake, rather than for its direct application to practical problems. They focus on abstract concepts, theories, and structures such as number theory, algebra, geometry, and mathematical logic. Their work often involves proving new theorems, developing new mathematical frameworks, and advancing the overall understanding of mathematical principles, which can later have unexpected applications in science, technology, and engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pure Mathematician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pure Mathematician, you need advanced mathematical reasoning, abstract thinking, and a graduate degree (often a Ph.D.) in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with mathematical software such as Mathematica, MATLAB, or LaTeX for documentation and research purposes is typically required. Strong analytical skills, perseverance, and effective written and verbal communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills are vital for developing new mathematical theories, publishing research, and collaborating with academic or industry peers.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in pure mathematics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in pure mathematics often encounter challenges such as working on abstract problems with solutions that may not have immediate practical applications. This can lead to periods of slow progress or difficulty in demonstrating the impact of their work. Collaboration with peers through seminars, conferences, and research groups is essential to gain new perspectives and overcome intellectual roadblocks. Additionally, regular communication within academic departments or research teams helps foster a supportive environment and facilitates the sharing of ideas, which can be crucial in advancing complex mathematical theories.

What is the highest paid math job?

The highest paid math-related job is often a quantitative analyst or financial mathematician, particularly in investment banking, hedge funds, or proprietary trading firms, where salaries can reach into the high six or seven figures with bonuses. These roles typically require advanced skills in statistics, programming, and financial modeling, often supported by a master's or Ph.D. in mathematics or related fields.

How much does a pure mathematician make?

Pure mathematicians typically earn between $60,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, education level, and employment sector such as academia, government, or private industry. Advanced degrees like a Ph.D. and strong analytical skills can lead to higher salaries and research opportunities.

What is the difference between Pure Math vs Data Analyst?

AspectPure MathData Analyst
Required CredentialsMathematical degrees, often advancedBachelor's or master's in statistics, mathematics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentAcademic, research institutions, or theoretical settingsBusiness, finance, tech companies, often in office settings
Industry UsageResearch, academia, theoretical developmentData interpretation, reporting, decision-making support
Common Search/ComparisonPure Math vs Data Analyst

Pure Math focuses on theoretical and abstract mathematical concepts, often in academic or research environments. Data Analysts apply statistical and mathematical skills to interpret data and support business decisions. While both roles require strong math skills, Pure Math is more research-oriented, whereas Data Analysts are more application-focused in industry settings.

Where do pure mathematicians work?

Pure mathematicians typically work in academic institutions such as universities and research institutes, where they conduct theoretical research and teach. They may also find employment in government laboratories, private research organizations, or as consultants, often using advanced mathematical tools and methods in their work.

Does NASA hire pure mathematicians?

NASA employs mathematicians, including those with expertise in pure mathematics, for research, data analysis, and problem-solving roles. These positions often require strong analytical skills, advanced degrees, and familiarity with scientific computing tools.

Position Details
Title Asst/Assoc Professor in Actuarial Science/Statistics, Math Education, Pure or Applied Appointment Status Tenure Track Department IU Indianapolis Department of Mathematics - School of Science Location Indianapolis Position Summary
FACULTY POSITION IN MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
Searching at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Actuarial Science/Statistics, Math Education, Pure or Applied

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in actuarial science (statistics or statistics/probability with experience in actuarial science, financial mathematics, or related fields), mathematics education, pure or applied mathematics to begin on or before August 1, 2024. Responsibilities include teaching six courses over the first two years, with at least one course each term, and then four courses a year regularly, maintaining a strong research program, publishing the results of research, and the customary student advising and departmental and university service. The Department has a strong research faculty, many funded research projects and close collaboration with other departments within the School of Science and the IU School of Medicine.
As one of the largest academic units on campus serving more than 13,000 students each year, the Department is central to the mission of IUPUI to advance the State of Indiana and the intellectual growth of its citizens to the highest levels. The appointment is intended to strengthen both research and our graduate programs, and enhance our undergraduate programs (actuarial sciences, mathematics education, pure, applied, and statistics). Current areas of research strength in the Department include mathematical physics and integrable systems, dynamical systems, operator algebras and non-commutative geometry, differential equations/geometry, mathematical neuroscience and biomathematics, scientific computing, statistics, and mathematics education.
The School of Science at IUPUI is committed to being an institution that not only reflects the diversity of the learners we teach, but also pursues the values of diversity, equity and inclusion that inform academic excellence. We desire candidates who enhance our representational diversity, as well as those whose work contributes to equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty. Additional information about the department and programs may be found at https://science.iupui.edu/math/index.html

Qualifications: Applicants must have an earned doctorate (at the time of appointment) in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics or related areas, a strong research program, and the ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants at the Associate Professor rank will be expected to show an excellent track record of publications, evidence of the ability to engage in independent and/or collaborative (inter)disciplinary research, and existing funding or a high potential for receiving funding from the NSF, NIH or other top tier agencies or organizations. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program.
A complete application must include: a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, statements on research plans and teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation. Screening of completed applications will begin on September 1, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
The IUPUI campus is located near downtown Indianapolis, a city that uniquely combines the cultural amenities of urban life with the residential qualities of smaller communities and is highly affordable. As the major center for industry and government within the state, Indianapolis has a wide variety of research and training sites.
Indiana University is an equal employment and affirmative action employer and a provider of ADA services. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, ethnicity, color, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or identity, marital status, national origin, disability status or protected veteran status. Indiana University does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its educational programs and activities, including employment and admission, as required by Title IX. A paper copy will be provided upon request from Public Safety at iups@iu.edu.
As the state's premier urban research institution, IUPUI is committed to being a welcoming campus community that reflects and enacts the values of diversity, equity and inclusion that inform academic excellence. We seek candidates who will not only enhance our representational diversity but whose research, teaching, and community engagement efforts contribute to diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning and working environments for our students, staff, and faculty. IUPUI condemns racism in all its forms and has taken an anti-racist stance that moves beyond mere statements to interrogating its policies, procedures, and practices. We hope to identify individuals who will assist in our mission to dismantle racism so that everyone has the opportunity to succeed at IUPUI.
