Job description

Receiving Lead Classification:

Non-Exempt

Reports to: Shipping Manager

Summary

The Receiving Lead is responsible for coordinating daily receiving operations in a steel manufacturing environment, including inbound raw material, finished goods transfers, steel racks, tooling, supplies, and production-related inventory. This position leads receiving priorities, verifies material accuracy and condition, directs proper staging and storage, maintains accurate inventory transactions, and supports production by ensuring the right material is available when needed. The ideal candidate will safely operate or coordinate the use of overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material-handling equipment; inspect incoming material for purchase order accuracy, heat numbers, quantity, and visible quality concerns; communicate issues to Purchasing, Quality, Production, and Shipping; and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free receiving area.

Essential Functions/Duties

1. Lead daily receiving activities by assigning priorities, coordinating workload, monitoring inbound trucks, and ensuring receiving tasks are completed safely, accurately, and in alignment with production and shipping needs.

2. Observe, follow and maintain a safe working environment.

3. Receive raw material including tasks involving inspections, verifying packing list, unloading and sorting, and allocating to its appropriate locations.

4. Verify incoming steel, fastener components, packaging, supplies, and outside-processed material against purchase orders, packing lists, heat numbers, bills of lading, and other required documentation; identify shortages, overages, damage, incorrect material, or missing paperwork and communicate discrepancies promptly.

5. Stage material for production by employing the use of Work Orders to identify area needs and ensuring the appropriate material is at the workstation where/when it is needed.

6. Regular cycle counting to verify stock/inventory levels. Communicate discrepancies to the supervisor if necessary.

7. Complete receiving transactions accurately in the company inventory system, including quantity received, material location, lot or heat information where applicable, and required notes for discrepancies, holds, or damaged material.

8. Perform safety checks to ensure safety devices are on and in working order (guarding and all safety equipment).

9. Maintain organized receiving, raw material, and staging areas by ensuring material is labeled, tagged, stored in the correct location, protected from damage, and arranged to support safe crane, forklift, and pedestrian traffic flow.

10. Ensure safe material handling practices are followed when using overhead cranes, forklifts, chains, slings, magnets, racks, and other equipment; report unsafe conditions, damaged rigging, equipment concerns, or unstable loads immediately.

11. Perform quality checks and document (where applicable), using simple gages, precision measuring devices and visual inspection.

12. Coordinate with Quality, Purchasing, Production, and Shipping when incoming material does not meet requirements; place suspect material on hold when directed, segregate nonconforming material, and ensure issues are documented and escalated before material is released for use.

13. Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Competencies

2. Ability to communicate, present facts and provide recommendations effectively in oral and written form.

4. Ability to give clear direction, follow up on assigned tasks, communicate receiving priorities, and escalate issues professionally to supervisors, purchasing, quality, production, shipping, vendors, and drivers.

5. Ability to work effectively with or without direct supervision as well as independently or in a team environment.
