Job description

The Purchasing / Inventory Control Specialist is responsible for purchasing materials, maintaining accurate inventory levels, coordinating material availability, and supporting the day-to-day needs of a manufacturing operation. This position works closely with production, suppliers, receiving, and management to ensure materials are available when needed while maintaining appropriate inventory levels and controlling costs.
Purchasing and expediting high-quality merchandise at the lowest possible price.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Purchase raw materials, metals, components, supplies, and production-related items based on production requirements and inventory levels.
  • Monitor inventory levels and identify shortages, excess inventory, and materials approaching reorder points.
  • Review material requirements, purchase orders, and production schedules to ensure timely purchasing.
  • Obtain and compare supplier pricing, lead times, and availability on a routine basis.
  • Issue purchase orders and follow up with suppliers regarding delivery dates and shortages.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records in Fishbowl or inventory management system.
  • Coordinate with receiving to ensure incoming materials are properly received and documented.
  • Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies, material shortages, and receiving issues.
  • Work with production and scheduling to prioritize material requirements.
  • Maintain supplier relationships and communicate changes in demand or delivery requirements.
  • Track material costs and assist with cost-saving and inventory-reduction initiatives.
  • Monitor scrap, material usage, and inventory adjustments as needed.
  • Maintain purchasing and inventory documentation and records.
  • Assist with periodic physical inventory counts and reconciliation.
  • Ensure purchased materials meet company specifications and quality requirements.
  • Monitor and follow applicable laws and regulations.
  • In conjunction with Shipping Manager, monitor shipments to ensure that goods come in on time. In the event of problems, trace shipments and follow up on undelivered goods.

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of purchasing, inventory control, materials management, or related experience, preferably in a metals manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with metals such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, or similar materials is preferred.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, material requirements, and production scheduling.
  • Experience with an ERP/MRP or inventory management system.
  • Formidable organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Self-starter with strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Negotiate and/or re-negotiate, and administer contracts or price agreements with suppliers, vendors, and other representatives.
  • Ability to read purchase orders, material specifications, and basic manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, QuickBooks and Fishbowl.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience purchasing sheet, plate, bar, tubing, structural materials, or other metal products.
  • Knowledge of material grades, sizes, and specifications.
  • Familiarity with mill certifications (MTRs), heat numbers, and material traceability.
  • Experience working with outside processors, metal service centers, and manufacturing suppliers.
  • Familiarity with inventory cycle counting and inventory accuracy programs.
Physical / Work Environment
This position may involve working in both an office and manufacturing/warehouse environment. Occasional walking through the production area and warehouse may be required.
 
Success in This Role
The successful candidate will keep materials flowing to production, maintain accurate inventory records, develop dependable supplier relationships, minimize material shortages and excess inventory, and help the company control purchasing and material costs.
