What is a pump design engineer?

A Pump Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing pumps used in various industries, such as oil and gas, water treatment, and manufacturing. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and fluid dynamics analysis to create efficient and reliable pump systems. Their role involves selecting appropriate materials, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and collaborating with other engineers to improve performance. Additionally, they may conduct testing, troubleshoot design issues, and support the manufacturing process to ensure quality and efficiency.

What are some typical challenges faced by pump design engineers in their daily work?

Pump Design Engineers often face the challenge of balancing efficiency, reliability, and cost while meeting strict industry standards and client specifications. They must solve complex fluid dynamics problems and troubleshoot designs to ensure optimal performance under varying conditions. Engineers frequently collaborate with manufacturing, quality assurance, and field service teams to incorporate feedback and address real-world constraints. Additionally, staying current with new materials and emerging technologies is important for creating innovative, competitive products in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pump design engineer?

A Pump Design Engineer should have a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, with expertise in fluid dynamics, hydraulics, and CAD software, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard design tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of codes like ANSI or API, is highly beneficial, and professional certification (e.g., PE licensure) is often advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, clear communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this field. These skills ensure the engineer can design effective, reliable pump systems that meet safety and performance requirements while collaborating efficiently with multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Senior Engineer

Capital Water & Wastewater Systems

Location: Kingwood (North Houston), TX  |  Work model: Onsite / hybrid; relocation support available  |  Full-time

Confidential, retained search | Raymond Search Group

Anchor the engineering nucleus of a fast-scaling water-technology business, and grow with it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is building its North American engineering organization around a substantial pipeline of incoming capital work, and this is one of two hires it has named top priority - explicitly the nucleus of the larger team being assembled. A former-engineer Group CEO engages engineering candidates personally.

The Senior Engineer holds complete technical ownership over capital treatment infrastructure from $1M to $20M, concept through commissioning, while mentoring the core engineering team. The seat carries a named growth path into Engineering Manager, reporting to the VP of Engineering, as the team scales.

The honest version: this is an onsite or hybrid seat in the North Houston area, the systems are bespoke rather than catalog, and the role has stayed open for months because the client will not compromise on caliber. Anchor position, anchor accountability.

WHAT YOU'LL OWN

Design Authority & Technical Leadership

  • Design authority. Final review and approval of P&IDs, fabrication drawings, electrical schematics, and BOMs.
  • Technical depth. Advanced hydraulics, pump design and selection, valve and instrumentation specification.
  • Mentorship. Develop the engineering bench being built around this seat.

Capital Project Delivery

  • End-to-end delivery. $1M-$20M systems, concept through commissioning, to the standard the client guarantees.
  • Cross-functional execution. Partner with Project Management on schedule and budget, and procurement on RFQs and vendor selection.

Commercial Partnership

  • Estimating support. Credible cost, labor, and subcontractor input into winning proposals.
  • Customer-facing composure. Represent engineering in customer and vendor reviews.

MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • On-schedule, on-specification delivery of assigned capital projects.
  • Quality and turnaround of engineering approvals across the team.
  • Growth and retention of the engineering bench.
  • Estimating accuracy reflected in project margins.
  • Readiness to step into the Engineering Manager seat.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated end-to-end delivery of industrial water, wastewater, or fluid-process systems, ideally $1M-$20M - owned, not assisted.
  • Deep range across hydraulics, pump design and selection, and valve and instrumentation specification.
  • BS or BE in Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil engineering strongly preferred.
  • Commercial polish for estimates and customer-facing reviews.
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, the North Houston area.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Mid-market or boutique background where engineers own projects end to end.
  • Mentoring experience and standard-setting.
  • Exposure to regulation-driven sectors: healthcare, food and beverage, energy, industrial process w

Our client is a leading international provider of water, wastewater, vapor-emissions, and material-recovery treatment and process-filtration solutions, with decades of expertise in Europe and a long-established North American presence. The business delivers engineered solutions and services that address its customers' most demanding water challenges, with sustainability at the core of everything it does. Full company detail and the growth plan are shared with candidates under confidentiality.
