What is a pulmonary function test?

A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a group of tests that measure how well your lungs work. These tests evaluate lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange to help diagnose and monitor lung conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory disorders. During a PFT, you may be asked to breathe into a tube connected to a machine that records your lung performance. The results help your healthcare provider determine the cause of breathing problems and guide treatment decisions.

What does a pulmonary function test technician do?

Professionals conducting Pulmonary Function Tests, such as respiratory therapists or PFT technicians, are responsible for preparing patients for testing, explaining procedures, and ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the process. Daily tasks include calibrating and maintaining testing equipment, conducting various lung function assessments (like spirometry and plethysmography), and accurately recording and interpreting test results. These professionals often collaborate closely with pulmonologists and other healthcare team members to provide critical diagnostic information that supports patient care decisions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a pulmonary function test technician?

To thrive as a Pulmonary Function Test Technician, you need a background in respiratory therapy or a related health science field, often with certification such as Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT). Familiarity with spirometry, plethysmography, gas diffusion systems, and relevant medical software is essential. Attention to detail, patient communication, and the ability to accurately follow testing protocols are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure precise test results, patient safety, and effective collaboration with healthcare teams in diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions.

What is the difference between Pulmonary Function Test vs Respiratory Therapist?

AspectPulmonary Function TestRespiratory Therapist
CredentialsOften requires certification in pulmonary testing or related trainingRequires respiratory therapy license or certification
Work EnvironmentPerformed in clinics, hospitals, or diagnostic labsWorks in hospitals, clinics, and patient care settings
Job RoleAdministers pulmonary tests to assess lung functionProvides respiratory care, manages ventilators, educates patients

While both roles involve respiratory health, Pulmonary Function Test specialists focus on conducting diagnostic tests, whereas Respiratory Therapists provide comprehensive respiratory care and treatment. They often work together but serve different functions within healthcare settings.

How to become a pulmonary function test technician?

To become a pulmonary function test technician, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and must complete specialized training or certification in pulmonary function testing. Certification from organizations like the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) can enhance job prospects, and familiarity with spirometry and other testing equipment is essential. Some positions may require an associate degree in respiratory therapy or a related health field.
