What does a publishing director do?

A Publishing Director oversees the entire publishing process for books, magazines, or digital content within a publishing house. They are responsible for developing publishing strategies, managing editorial teams, acquiring new titles or content, and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Publishing Directors also collaborate with marketing, sales, and design departments to maximize the reach and success of publications. Their role often includes setting overall company direction, negotiating contracts, and maintaining relationships with authors and agents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a publishing director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Publishing Director, you need expertise in editorial strategy, content acquisition, and market analysis, usually supported by a degree in publishing, literature, or a related field and substantial industry experience. Familiarity with digital publishing platforms, rights management systems, and project management tools is essential. Exceptional leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help you to inspire teams and build strong industry relationships. These skills are vital for steering successful publishing programs, adapting to market trends, and achieving business growth.

How does a publishing director typically collaborate with editorial, marketing, and sales teams to ensure a successful book launch?

A Publishing Director plays a central role in coordinating efforts between editorial, marketing, and sales teams to ensure each book launch meets its goals. They oversee the editorial process to maintain quality and align content with market trends, work closely with marketing to develop effective campaigns, and collaborate with sales to establish distribution strategies. Regular cross-team meetings are common, where the Publishing Director facilitates communication, resolves conflicts, and ensures that timelines and objectives are met. This collaborative approach is key to navigating challenges, such as shifting market demands or unexpected production issues, and ultimately drives the commercial success of each publication.

Job description

For 50 years, Consumers' Checkbook has helped people cut through marketing hype and make confident decisions about the doctors, dentists, contractors, and services they trust with their money, their homes, and their health. We're an independent, nonprofit consumer organization funded entirely by our members and donors - no advertising, no conflicts of interest, just unbiased ratings and advice people can't get anywhere else. We're looking for a Vice President of Checkbook to lead the team and strategy behind everything that connects our research to the people who need it: marketing, membership, digital operations, content strategy, fundraising, and public relations. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role for someone who can run day-to-day operations while steering the organization through real transitions - growing new audiences, modernizing our digital presence, and building a stronger, more diversified base of member and donor support. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, hands on leader who can manage ongoing operations while driving key transitions and improvements across the organization. You'll report directly to the President and sit on the leadership team as the operational lead for Checkbook, working closely with senior leadership and the board to shape where the organization goes next. What you'll do:Build and lead a team spanning editorial, PR, marketing, member operations, and fundraising.Set and execute marketing strategy - owning the budget, testing new approaches, and doubling down on whatworks.Expand our reach into new audience segments and guide the organization's transition away from print.Oversee the Checkbook website's day-to-day performance, new features, accessibility, and impact metrics.Grow and strengthen our fundraising program, building on recent momentum in donor engagement.Shape media relations and PR strategy, and find creative ways to extend our content's reach through coverage and partnerships.Align research, editorial, and marketing so every piece of content we produce serves our members and mission.Contribute to organizational strategy alongside CSS leadership and the board of directors. Please review the full job description for a better picture!Ideal Qualifications:10+ years as a senior leader with both strategic and operational responsibility - ideally in publishing, media, consumer advocacy, or a related field.A track record in marketing, membership/subscriber management, or digital operations.Experience building and developing high-performing teams, ideally in a mission-driven or nonprofit setting.Comfort owning a budget and rigorously evaluating what's working.A collaborative style - you can lead cross-functional teams and coordinate across departments without friction.Strong public-facing communication skills.Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field (Master's a plus).Fundraising experience is a plus, not a requirement. Why Checkbook? This is a rare chance to lead the commercial and audience-facing side of an organization whose entire reason for existing is to help ordinary people make better decisions with their money.
