How much do publication editor jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for publication editor in the United States is $64,031.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $50,000.00 and $72,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a publication editor do?

A Publication Editor is responsible for reviewing, revising, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of written content before it is published. They check for grammar, style, clarity, and consistency, and may also oversee the layout and design aspects of the publication. Publication Editors often coordinate with writers, designers, and other team members to meet deadlines and uphold the publication's standards. Their work is essential in producing professional and error-free materials for books, magazines, newspapers, or digital platforms.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a publication editor?

To thrive as a Publication Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, typically supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP or Chicago), content management systems, and editing software like Adobe InCopy or Microsoft Word is crucial. Excellent attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are essential soft skills that distinguish top editors. These abilities ensure the accuracy, clarity, and quality of published content, maintaining the publication’s credibility and meeting tight deadlines.

What are common challenges publication editors face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Publication Editors often juggle several articles or projects at once, which requires strong organizational and time-management skills. Balancing tight deadlines, coordinating with writers, and ensuring consistency in tone and quality can be challenging, especially during peak publishing periods. Effective editors use detailed editorial calendars, prioritize tasks, and maintain clear communication with contributors to keep projects on track. Adapting to shifting priorities and last-minute changes is also a key part of the role.

Job description

Temporary Editor – Part-Time

Pay: $25.00/hour

Hours: Approximately 20 hours/week

Schedule: Monday–Friday | Approximately 4 hours/day

Preferred Schedule: 8:30 AM–12:00/12:30 PM

Work Arrangement: Hybrid or Onsite

Assignment: Temporary | Approximately 1 month

Target Start: Mid-September to early October

About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Temporary Editor to support the Communications & Marketing team of a highly respected local organization. This is an excellent short-term opportunity for an experienced editor, communications professional, or writer/editor who enjoys polishing content, catching the details others miss, and helping organizations communicate clearly and consistently.

The position is approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Morning availability is strongly preferred, ideally 8:30 AM–12:00/12:30 PM, although some flexibility may be available.

This position can be hybrid, provided you are consistently available and responsive during your scheduled hours. For candidates who prefer an office environment, onsite workspace is also available.

The assignment is expected to last approximately one month, with an anticipated start between mid-September and early October to allow time for training and onboarding.

What You'll Be Doing

The primary focus of this position is copy editing and proofreading, rather than creating large amounts of original content. You will serve as an editorial resource for a variety of internal and external communications, including:

  • Copy editing and proofreading written materials
  • Reviewing content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, clarity, and consistency
  • Fact-checking information prior to publication
  • Editing content to align with established AP Style and organizational editorial guidelines
  • Reviewing voice and tone while maintaining the writer's original intent
  • Editing announcements, website copy, feature stories, newsletters, internal communications, talking points, and other materials
  • Providing constructive editorial feedback and guidance to writers
  • Managing both quick-turn requests and larger projects with longer deadlines

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of professional editing, copy-editing, writing, journalism, communications, or similar experience
  • Strong professional proofreading and copy-editing skills
  • Working knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience working within established editorial or organizational style guidelines
  • Ability to edit for voice, tone, clarity, accuracy, grammar, and consistency
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments
  • Comfortable working with quick deadlines and time-sensitive content
  • Strong communication skills and ability to provide thoughtful editorial feedback

Experience within higher education, journalism, media, communications, marketing, PR, nonprofit, government, or another organization serving multiple audiences may translate especially well.
