Public Safety Sergeant

Location: East Baltimore Campus - Baltimore, MD
Department: Public Safety
Schedule: Full-Time | Weekends & Holidays Required
At Johns Hopkins Medicine, we are committed to creating a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for our patients, visitors, staff, and community. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Public Safety Sergeant to join our East Baltimore Public Safety team and help lead security operations across one of the nation's premier academic healthcare systems.
Position Summary
The Public Safety Sergeant provides frontline leadership and operational oversight for Public Safety Officers and security personnel throughout the East Baltimore campus. This role is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure healthcare environment through supervision, emergency response coordination, investigations, training support, and collaboration with hospital leadership and external agencies.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and team leader with experience in healthcare security, law enforcement, military service, or public safety operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and support Public Safety Officers and security staff during assigned shifts
  • Coordinate daily security operations including patrol, surveillance monitoring, access control, and emergency response
  • Respond to incidents, disturbances, and emergency situations while ensuring timely and professional resolution
  • Conduct investigations, prepare reports, and document security-related incidents
  • Assist with officer training, drills, and operational readiness initiatives
  • Monitor security systems and recommend improvements to safety protocols and procedures
  • Partner with hospital departments, local law enforcement, and emergency responders to strengthen campus security
  • Promote professionalism, accountability, and customer service excellence within the department

Qualifications
Required
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in security, law enforcement, military, or related public safety environment
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience
  • Valid driver's license with no more than 5 current points and a valid safety score verified through SAMBA
  • Must be at least 21 years old

Preferred
  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or related field
  • Healthcare security experience
  • Specialized training in emergency response, crisis intervention, or security management
  • Experience with surveillance systems, access control systems, and incident reporting software

Certifications & Licensing
  • Maryland Security Guard License required within 90 days of hire
  • IAHSS Supervisor Certification required
  • Must successfully complete post-hire training including CPR, Narcan, Stop the Bleed, and de-escalation training

Salary Range: Minimum 26.51/hour - Maximum 43.76/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
