What does a public accounting intern do?

A Public Accounting Intern supports professional accountants in tasks such as preparing financial statements, assisting with audits, and organizing tax documents. Interns gain hands-on experience by working with client data, learning accounting software, and observing how public accounting firms operate. This role provides valuable exposure to the accounting profession, helping interns build practical skills and knowledge for a future career as a certified public accountant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a public accounting intern?

To thrive as a Public Accounting Intern, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and progress toward a degree in accounting or a related field. Familiarity with spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel, accounting platforms such as QuickBooks, and basic knowledge of tax preparation tools are typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills help interns adapt quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These skills are crucial for ensuring accuracy, meeting deadlines, and supporting the work of senior accountants in a fast-paced environment.

What types of projects and clients can a public accounting intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Public Accounting Intern, you will typically gain exposure to a variety of projects, ranging from audit engagements to tax preparation and consulting assignments. Interns often work with clients from diverse industries, allowing you to develop a broad understanding of different business models and financial practices. You’ll likely collaborate with senior associates and managers, assisting with tasks such as compiling financial statements, performing account reconciliations, and supporting audit fieldwork. This hands-on experience helps interns build foundational skills and develop professional relationships, often paving the way for full-time opportunities within the firm.
