Job description

Description
The Department of Psychology at St. Mary's College of Maryland is accepting applications for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor of Psychology (Clinical/Counseling), beginning fall 2027. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is essential. The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $78,000 based on level of experience; startup costs are negotiable; benefits information is available online (https://www.smcm.edu/human-resources/benefits-and-leave/).
Teaching responsibilities will include general courses in the psychology major (e.g., Intro to Psychology; Psychological Research, Analysis, and Writing; Scientific Writing and Professional Development), breadth courses in Clincal/Counseling, and topics courses in an area of specialization. The standard teaching load is 3 courses per semester, although supervision of senior thesis projects counts toward the teaching load. The development of an active research program involving undergraduates is expected, and a commitment to culturally competent teaching/mentoring and fostering inclusive and equitable learning environments is essential. St. Mary's College is committed to excellence in teaching and undergraduate research.
To support your transition and professional development, first-year faculty are provided a reduced workload, shared course materials, and a structured mentoring program. We offer negotiated start-up grants and lab space to continue your research, especially encouraging projects that involve undergraduate students. Opportunities to include students in research are rewarded through guided research courses, such as PSYC 396 - Collaborative Research and PSYC X97 - Directed Research. The department has a robust history of bringing student and faculty research to regional and national conferences, and a number of faculty have collaborated with students on peer-reviewed publications (https://www.smcm.edu/program-psychology/research-opportunities/). The department values theoretical, empirical, and applied scholarship; there are many ways to thrive as a professor here.
Non-sectarian since its founding, St. Mary's College of Maryland, a public Carnegie Baccalaureate, Arts and Sciences institution located in St. Mary's City, 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., has been designated a national public honors college. With selective admissions policies, academically talented students, and a rigorous curriculum, we offer a small college experience similar to that found at exceptional private colleges. St. Mary's faculty benefit from a comprehensive program of support for scholarship, research, travel, and curriculum development, including course releases for pre tenure faculty and leaves for tenured faculty. The quality of life is enhanced by the recreational opportunities of the Chesapeake region and by our proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Psychology or a related field (ABD acceptable at the time of application).
Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
Application Instructions
St. Mary's College is committed to access, equity, inclusion, and diversity. We create an environment that recognizes the value of individual and group differences, and we encourage inquiries from applicants who will contribute to our cultural and ethnic diversity. The Psychology Department seeks scholars whose pedagogical practice improves the educational experience of underrepresented students. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven commitment to culturally responsive teaching practices that promote belomnging, inclusion, and equity.
Application materials should include a cover letter (which should speak to ways in which the candidate's teaching will contribute to a campus culture of inclusion), curriculum vitae (including email address), statement of teaching philosophy, statement of research interests, and evidence of teaching effectiveness if available (e.g., teaching evaluations, observation notes). We request three professional references (rather than letters of recommendation) at the time of application. Of these three reference, at least one referee should speak to the candidate's disciplinary expertise, and at least one should have seen the candidate deliver or design classroom instruction. References will be contacted only for candidates who advance to finalist interviews. Applications are being accepted online at https://apply.interfolio.com/190337, with reviews starting on September 1, 2026 and continuing until the position is filled. Applicants should expect a response by October 15, 2026.
