Psychological Testing Internship information

What is a psychological testing internship?

A Psychological Testing Internship is a supervised training experience where students or early-career professionals learn how to administer, score, and interpret psychological assessments. Interns typically work in clinics, hospitals, schools, or private practices under the guidance of licensed psychologists. The internship provides practical experience with various testing instruments, including cognitive, personality, and neuropsychological tests. It also helps interns develop skills in report writing, ethical test administration, and communicating results to clients or other professionals.

What does a psychological testing intern do?

As a Psychological Testing Intern, you will typically assist with administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological assessments under the supervision of licensed psychologists. Your daily responsibilities may include preparing testing materials, observing assessment sessions, and writing preliminary reports or summaries. You’ll also help ensure ethical standards and confidentiality are maintained throughout the testing process. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to various assessment tools and offers opportunities to collaborate with professionals across clinical, educational, or research settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a psychological testing intern?

To thrive as a Psychological Testing Intern, you generally need coursework in psychology, familiarity with assessment methods, and enrollment in a relevant graduate program. Experience with psychological testing tools such as the MMPI, WAIS, and scoring software, as well as knowledge of APA ethical standards, is common. Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and effective communication are vital soft skills for building trust and ensuring accurate results. These competencies are essential for supporting licensed psychologists, maintaining ethical standards, and delivering reliable assessments in clinical or research settings.
