Job Title: Packaging Process Support Specialist (PSS) in STAR

Location: Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, Tarboro, NC

Position Overview:
As a Packaging Process Support Specialist (PSS) at Sara Lee Frozen Bakery, you will play a crucial role as a line leader on the production or packaging floor. In this role, you will provide hands-on support to the Operations Supervisor, leading the daily activities associated with the operation of production or packaging lines. Your primary responsibilities will include ensuring the efficient operation of these lines, adhering to both Sara Lee Frozen Bakery’s internal standards and external regulatory requirements, and fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

You will be a key part of a collaborative team working to achieve operational goals while ensuring product quality and safety. This position requires a proactive, problem-solving approach to daily operations, with the ability to address challenges as they arise.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Line Leadership:
    • Take charge of the daily operations of the production or packaging lines, leading the team to ensure efficiency and smooth workflow.
    • Provide consistent support to the Operations Supervisor, maintaining seamless communication throughout the shift.
  2. Process Support:
    • Ensure the proper functioning of production and packaging equipment, resolving any operational issues or challenges promptly.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and collaborate with maintenance teams to address technical issues as they arise.
    • Assist in ensuring that production goals are met by overseeing and coordinating the day-to-day line activities.
  3. Compliance:
    • Ensure adherence to both Sara Lee Frozen Bakery’s internal standards and all relevant regulatory requirements (FDA, Quality Control, etc.) during all production and packaging activities.
    • Support the completion of routine regulatory checks and ensure proper documentation is maintained.
    • Monitor adherence to all food safety and quality regulations to guarantee the production of high-quality, safe products.
  4. Teamwork and Communication:
    • Collaborate with production associates, maintenance personnel, and other supervisors to ensure optimal line performance and problem resolution.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with employees, conveying changes to schedules, procedures, or operational goals.
    • Report labor shortages and any operational delays to the Operations Supervisor, helping to develop solutions to overcome obstacles.
  5. Training and Development:
    • Assist in the training of new and existing production associates, ensuring they are proficient in the equipment, safety protocols, and production standards.
    • Foster a learning environment where team members feel empowered and equipped to perform their tasks effectively.
  6. Safety:
    • Take a proactive role in maintaining a safe work environment by enforcing safety protocols and procedures.
    • Ensure that all team members follow Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
    • Identify and address potential safety hazards, ensuring immediate action is taken when needed.
  7. Quality Assurance:
    • Help maintain and improve the quality of products by ensuring adherence to quality control standards throughout the production process.
    • Participate in root cause problem-solving activities and support the development of corrective actions.
  8. Continuous Improvement:
    • Contribute to ongoing efforts to improve production processes, identifying areas for enhancement and implementing lean practices (such as 5S and OIFs).
    • Support the identification and execution of process improvements to enhance productivity and product quality.
  9. Other Duties:
    • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Operations Supervisor to support team and company objectives.
    • Coordinate team rotations and break schedules, ensuring the line operates efficiently.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • The role requires the ability to work in cold temperatures (down to -10°F) and in a dusty, noisy environment with potential slippery floors.
  • Regular physical activity is required, including the ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds consistently throughout a shift.
  • Must be comfortable with climbing ladders and operating forklifts, and be willing to work in environments with potential exposure to airborne particles, fumes, and noise levels exceeding 85dBL.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Experience: A minimum of one year of experience leading teams in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Skills:
    • Basic computer skills are required to utilize the ERP system for entering and scanning ingredients and quantities.
    • Must be able to effectively communicate with team members at all levels within the plant.
    • Ability to troubleshoot production issues and contribute to root cause analysis and problem-solving.
    • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid forklift/Powered Industrial Truck license.
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) experience is essential for safe operation.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work legally in the United States.
  • Must successfully pass a background and urinalysis screening as part of the post-offer health assessment.

Work Schedule:

  • This position requires flexibility to work across various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
