What is a personal support specialist?

Personal Support Specialists (PSS) are professionals who assist individuals with daily living activities, typically in a home or community setting. Their responsibilities often include helping with personal hygiene, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and mobility support. PSS workers play a crucial role in supporting elderly individuals, people with disabilities, or clients recovering from illness or surgery, enabling them to maintain their independence and quality of life. While educational requirements vary by state or employer, PSS workers usually complete a specialized training program and may need certification.

Both Pss and Security Guard roles involve security responsibilities, but Pss often requires specialized certifications and may work in more corporate or industrial settings. Security Guards typically operate in public or private property protection. While their duties overlap, Pss roles tend to focus on more technical or specialized security tasks, making them distinct in training and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal support specialist?

To thrive as a Personal Support Specialist, you need basic healthcare knowledge, personal care skills, and often a state-recognized PSS certification. Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and medical equipment for mobility or hygiene assistance is typically required. Compassion, patience, and strong interpersonal communication are vital soft skills for building trust with clients and providing emotional support. These skills and qualifications ensure clients receive safe, respectful, and effective daily care, enhancing their quality of life and independence.

What are some common challenges faced by a patient support specialist and how can they be managed?

Patient Support Specialists often navigate challenges such as balancing multiple patient inquiries, handling sensitive health information, and addressing urgent concerns with empathy and accuracy. Effective time management, strong communication skills, and familiarity with healthcare systems are key to managing these demands. Seeking support from team members and staying updated on healthcare regulations also help PSS professionals provide high-quality assistance while maintaining patient confidentiality and satisfaction.

Job Description

Join a collaborative GMP lab where your hands-on experience with cell‑based assays and ELISA workflows will be put to use every day. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys staying close to the bench while also helping support and guide a small team. You’ll play a key role in assay execution, method support, and day-to-day lab operations in a fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute cell-based assays, ligand-binding ELISAs, and related workflows
  • Perform routine tasks such as cell plating, dilutions, and 96-well plate work
  • Apply strong aseptic technique and pipetting skills in a GMP setting

Method & Lab Support

  • Assist with method qualification, transfer, and troubleshooting
  • Help ensure consistency and quality of assay execution

Documentation & Compliance

  • Accurately record work in lab notebooks/e-systems
  • Follow GMP documentation practices and data integrity standards

Team Support

  • Help coordinate daily lab activities and support team workflow
  • Provide guidance and training to junior team members as needed
  • Act as a go-to resource for technical questions on the team

Collaboration

  • Work closely with clients, peers and supervisors to meet timelines and deliverables
  • Contribute to a positive, team-oriented lab environment
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with >6 years of relevant industry experience & supervisory experience, or;
  • Master's degree with >5 years of relevant industry experience & supervisory experience, or;
  • PhD  with 4+ years of relevant industry experience & supervisory experience
  • Minimum 4 years of hands‑on industry lab experience (GMP required; academic‑only backgrounds are not a fit)
  • Strong technical background in cell‑based assays, reporter‑gene assays, ELISAs, 96‑well plate workflows, multi‑channel pipetting, cell culture, cell counting, and cell banking

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated leadership experience
    • Technical depth may offset the need for formal leadership experience.
    • Thrives in a high‑visibility, highly collaborative environment with interaction across teams and clients

    Communication & Work Style

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to handle tough questions and think on your feet
    • Detail‑oriented, self‑driven, and adaptable in a fast‑paced, plate‑based workflow
    • Strong prioritization skills with a proactive, solution‑focused mindset

    Compliance & Documentation

    • Strong documentation discipline and a GMP‑aligned mindset
    • Able to maintain accurate, audit‑ready records and follow procedures consistently
    • Comfortable supporting audit activities and representing the team with confidence

    Additional Information

Position is full-time, first-shift, Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM with overtime as needed.

    Excellent full-time benefits include:

    • Comprehensive medical coverage, dental, and vision options
