What is pruning and what does a pruning job involve?

Pruning is the process of selectively removing branches, buds, or roots from trees, shrubs, or plants to improve their health, appearance, and growth. A pruning job typically involves assessing plants for dead, diseased, or overgrown parts and using tools like shears or saws to carefully cut them away. Proper pruning encourages healthy growth, improves air circulation, and can help prevent disease. People who do pruning work may be employed in landscaping, horticulture, or agriculture and often work outdoors.

What is the difference between Pruning vs Tree Trimming?

Pruning focuses on maintaining tree health and safety through precise cuts, often requiring specialized skills and certifications. Tree trimming is mainly for aesthetic purposes and shaping, usually performed by general landscapers. Understanding these differences helps ensure proper care and safety for trees.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in pruning roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in pruning often encounter challenges such as identifying the correct timing for pruning specific plants, managing physical fatigue from repetitive tasks, and ensuring the use of proper techniques to avoid damaging plants. These challenges can be addressed by staying informed about plant species’ growth cycles, using ergonomic tools, and participating in ongoing training to refine pruning skills. Additionally, effective communication with team members and supervisors helps coordinate tasks, ensuring that work is completed efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pruner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pruner, you need knowledge of plant biology, pruning techniques, and experience with landscaping or horticulture, often supported by on-the-job training or a relevant certificate. Familiarity with pruning tools such as shears, saws, and safety equipment is necessary, and some roles may require knowledge of specific tree management software or equipment. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and good communication with team members are valuable soft skills in this position. These skills ensure healthy plant growth, safety, and efficient maintenance of landscapes or orchards.

Job description

Now Hiring: Landscape Pruning & Bed Maintenance Crew Member

Based in the Treasure Valley | Competitive Pay | Full-Time

We’re looking for a detail-oriented crew member to join our team at Pro-Vision Landscape. This role focuses on plant and bed maintenance—not mowing or irrigation. If you like working outdoors, have a good eye for detail, and want to help keep landscapes looking clean, healthy, and beautiful, this would be a great fit!

What You’ll Do:

  • Prune shrubs, trees, and plants for shape and health

  • Weed and clean out beds, walkways, and borders

  • Remove dead plants, debris, and spent blooms

  • Maintain seasonal curb appeal (mulch, bed edges, light trimming)

  • Communicate with foremen about plant health, problems, or replacements needed

  • Occasionally assist with loading/unloading materials at job sites

  • Ensure that the work we do represents the brand accordingly

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experience with pruning, planting, or general landscape maintenance is a plus

  • Attention to detail—you notice what others miss

  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather

  • Punctual, dependable, and ready to work

  • Someone with knowledge about various tree, shrub, and plant care practices

  • Skills in gardening and occasional weed treatment

What You Get:

  • Solid, competitive pay based on experience

  • Monday–Friday schedule

  • Year-round employment (Weather Depending)

  • Work with a team that respects you and gives you space to do your best work

  • Be a part of a team that values communication, strong leadership, and learning from mistakes

  • Room to grow in multiple ways with the company as we expand

  • A team that supports you, and leadership that respects effort and attitude

If you’re someone who finds satisfaction in making landscapes look clean, cared-for, and beautiful—we’d love to meet you! Apply today and help us build something real.
