What is a provider?

Providers in healthcare are individuals or organizations that deliver medical services to patients. This includes doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinics, and hospitals. Providers are responsible for diagnosing conditions, prescribing treatments, and managing overall patient care. The term can refer to both individual professionals and institutions, depending on the context. Providers must typically be licensed and meet specific qualifications to practice.

How does a provider typically collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care?

Providers, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants, regularly work alongside nurses, specialists, pharmacists, and administrative staff to deliver holistic patient care. This collaboration often involves multidisciplinary team meetings, coordinated care plans, and regular communication—both in person and through electronic health records. Strong collaboration helps reduce errors, ensures continuity of care, and improves patient outcomes. Applicants should be prepared to participate actively in team discussions and contribute to shared decision-making processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a healthcare provider, and why are they important?

To thrive as a healthcare Provider, you need a strong background in clinical medicine, diagnostic skills, and an appropriate medical or advanced practice degree (MD, DO, NP, or PA) with current licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), medical coding systems, and diagnostic tools is essential. Excellent communication, empathy, and strong decision-making abilities help build trust with patients and work effectively within care teams. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, effective patient care and support positive health outcomes in a complex healthcare environment.

Job description

ROLE: The Staff Psychiatric Provider is part of the Student Health & Wellness Center (SHWC) team. The individual in this role participates in SHWC programming and provides psychiatric services to St. John's College students within the scope of practice of a Maryland-licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner or psychiatrist. This position does not include any benefits. No evenings, weekends, or holidays are required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric services—including review of patient records, diagnostic assessments, psychopharmacological evaluations, treatment planning, crisis management, and ongoing medication management—to a racially, ethnically, sexually, and economically diverse student population.
  • Prescribe psychotropic and related medications based on clinical indications of a patient’s status to treat symptoms of psychiatric disorders and improve functional health status.
  • Order and interpret findings of relevant diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  • Educate patients on the nature of their psychiatric condition, provide appropriate instructions for recommended intervention and treatments, and counsel patients regarding health promotion and preventative measures.
  • Communicate with other providers, hospitals, and appropriate family members regarding the psychiatric care of patients.
  • Coordinate in-SHWC and community referrals for patients.
  • Maintain current, accurate, and timely clinical documentation in accordance with state and federal law, medical ethics, and SHWC policies.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with SHWC medical and mental health providers, providing and seeking consultation, in an effort to deliver effective, holistic care to the SJC student community.
  • Support and participate in SHWC programming, including outreach to the college community on topics of mental health and overall wellness.
  • Participate in staff and clinical team meetings.
  • Remain current on emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in psychiatry.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and SHWC policies and procedures.
  • Be teachable with colleagues and patients and demonstrate a positive attitude as a representative of the SHWC—on campus and in the larger community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Applicant should be physically capable of walking or standing a post outdoors for extended periods of time, as well as ascending and descending stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Education: Psychiatric nurse practitioners: Master’s degree from accredited school of nursing, as well as Post-Master’s Certificate as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).
  • Psychiatrists: Medical degree from accredited school of medicine or osteopathy, as well as completion of psychiatry residency.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience providing psychiatric services.
  • Licensed or eligible to receive license to practice as a PMHNP or psychiatrist in the state of Maryland.
  • Prescriptive authority with active Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number is required.
  • Demonstrated competency in providing comprehensive psychiatric care with knowledge of medication regimens and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration.
  • Excellent understanding of the developmental and mental health challenges affecting emerging adults, as well as ability to differentiate psychiatric presentations of medical conditions from psychiatric disorders.
  • Experience working with dual-diagnosis patients and those experiencing suicidality.
  • Ability to discuss medical information with patients and families in an understandable manner with a high degree of tact.
  • Ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a collaborative team.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of confidential psychiatric care.
  • High standards of integrity and ethics in both performance and behavior.
  • Basic skill in the operation of personal computers and related software, including an EHR system.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is primarily a 9-month, hourly position working the following hours:

  • August 15-May 14, when the college is in-session: 9-10 hours per week
    • 9 hours per week of regularly-scheduled, in-person time across 2 days, one of which must be Wednesdays 9a-1:30p or 2p due to established meeting/programming structure.

  • May 15-August 14, during student Summer Break: 0-5 hours per month
    • Noncompulsory—based on staff interest and availability, patient eligibility and needs, and institutional needs.
