How much do prototype model maker jobs pay per hour?
What does a typical day look like for a Prototype Model Maker?
A typical day for a Prototype Model Maker involves reviewing design plans or CAD drawings, selecting materials, and using a range of hand and power tools or machines to build physical models of new products or parts. You might spend part of your day operating 3D printers or CNC machines, assembling components, and collaborating closely with engineers and designers to resolve technical challenges. Attention to detail and adaptability are crucial, as you may need to create iterations or make adjustments based on feedback. The role can be both creative and technical, and often includes problem-solving in a hands-on workshop or lab environment.
What does a Prototype Model Maker do?
A Prototype Model Maker creates physical models and prototypes of products to help designers, engineers, and manufacturers test form, fit, and function. They use various materials, tools, and techniques, including CNC machining, 3D printing, and handcrafting, to build accurate representations of product concepts. Their work helps refine designs before mass production, reducing costs and identifying potential design flaws early in the process.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Prototype Model Maker position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Prototype Model Maker, you need a solid background in fabrication, technical drawing interpretation, and hands-on skills with materials such as plastics, metals, and wood, often supported by relevant technical training or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printers, CNC machines, and other model-making tools is commonly required. Attention to detail, creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial because they allow for precise, innovative, and collaborative creation of functional prototypes that meet design and engineering specifications.

Identify the necessary materials as required or specified for the job. - Setup and operate manual machines – experience with lathes, surface grinders, drilling machines, turning machines and mills is required.
- Knowledge of CNC lathes, CNC mills and wire EDM.
- Assemble dies and fixtures and tryout tests.
- Perform inspection and tryout operations as specified for tooling and equipment.
- Must be able to work with complex CAD models, drawings for work that requires close tolerances.
- Must be able to understand and use shop mathematics and handbook formulas.
- Must be capable of using machine tools and hand tools to properly fit and assemble parts, repair or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools.
- Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
- Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
- Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
- Studies blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan operation sequences for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies; verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts using measuring instruments.
- Knowledge of G-Code, CAD/CAM and programing experience (Solid Works, Smart CAM, or Master CAM would be a plus).
- Evaluate material properties and metallurgical characteristics to determine appropriate machining methods, heat treatment processes, and tolerances for tools and dies.
- Perform precision boring and threading operations to achieve proper class of fit for tooling components.
- MIG and TIG Welding.
- CNC equipment programming.
