How much do protein purification postdoc jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for protein purification postdoc in the United States is $29.64, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.68 and $32.69 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Protein Purification Postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Protein Purification Postdoc, you need advanced knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, and protein chemistry, typically supported by a PhD in a related field. Experience with protein purification systems (such as FPLC and HPLC), analytical techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western blot), and relevant software is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies ensure the efficient isolation and characterization of proteins, which is crucial for high-quality research outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by Protein Purification Postdocs when scaling up protocols from research to production levels?

Protein Purification Postdocs often encounter challenges when translating small-scale laboratory protocols to larger-scale production, including maintaining protein stability, optimizing yield, and ensuring reproducibility. Differences in buffer composition, equipment limitations, and increased risk of protein degradation can complicate the process. Collaborating closely with upstream (expression) and downstream (analytical) teams is crucial for troubleshooting and achieving consistent results. Gaining experience with a variety of purification systems and techniques can help overcome these challenges and broaden career opportunities in both academia and industry.

What are Protein Purification Postdocs?

Protein Purification Postdocs are researchers who have completed their doctoral studies and are engaged in advanced training and research focused on isolating and purifying proteins from various sources. Their work typically involves designing and optimizing purification protocols, analyzing protein structure and function, and supporting broader biochemical or biomedical research projects. They often use techniques such as chromatography, electrophoresis, and affinity tagging. These postdoctoral researchers play a key role in advancing scientific understanding of proteins and developing applications in fields like medicine, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals.

Job description

Description

Boehringer Ingelheim's Development organization is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to advance our understanding of the molecular, cellular, and biophysical determinants that influence the design, expression, protein purification, and manufacturability of nextgeneration biotherapeutics. This position focuses on fundamental mechanism-driven research that directly informs biologic modality design, platform improvement, and innovative solutions supporting Boehringer Ingelheim's expanding pipeline of complex therapeutic proteins.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of discovery science, molecular engineering, and bioprocess innovation contributing to transformative technologies that enable scalable, robust development of novel biologics. You will collaborate across diverse scientific groups, integrate cutting-edge methodologies, and translate mechanistic insights into practical, platform-level advancements.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you will conduct independent research under the mentorship of an experienced Investigator and a supportive multidisciplinary team. The position encourages scientific creativity, rigorous experimentation, and publication of results in leading journals. Postdoctoral Fellowships are two-year appointments with the possibility of a one-year extension.

As an employee of Boehringer Ingelheim, you will actively contribute to the discovery, development, and delivery of our products to our patients and customers. Our global presence provides opportunity for all employees to collaborate internationally, offering visibility and opportunity to directly contribute to the companies' success. We realize that our strength and competitive advantage lie with our people. We support our employees in several ways to foster a healthy working environment, meaningful work, mobility, networking, and work-life balance. Our competitive compensation and benefit programs reflect Boehringer Ingelheim's high regard for our employees.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Characterize protein purification and downstream unit operations including clarification, centrifugation, depth filtration, and sterile filtration to understand their impact on product yield, purity, and particle integrity.
  • Evaluate chromatography performance (e.g., IEX, mixed-mode, affinity, HIC) to identify factors influencing impurity clearance, product recovery, resin fouling, and process robustness.
  • Develop and optimize innovative methodologies (experimental, computational, or analytical) to study biologic behavior and improve platform performance.
  • Design and execute mechanism-driven experiments, leveraging advanced technologies to address key scientific questions in biotherapeutics design and development.
  • Define scalable downstream processing solutions suitable for pilot- and GMPscale implementation.
  • Present findings to cross-functional teams, contribute to internal technology platforms, and publish results in peerreviewed journals.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biophysics, or related discipline.
  • Strong scientific background in colloidal chemistry, interfacial science, protein purification, or chromatographic separations.
  • Demonstrated creativity, innovation, and scientific rigor with a strong publication record.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and interpret complex experiments.
  • Excellent scientific writing, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to safety, documentation, and adherence to SOPs and regulatory guidelines.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • This position will require individuals to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical or religious accommodation. Click link for more information on the vaccine mandate and COVID-19: https://www.boehringer-ingelheim.us/covid-19
