PROTECTIVE SERVICES SAFETY OFFICER - FULL-TIME
About The DoSeum
The DoSeum is San Antonio’s only museum exclusively devoted to children ages 11 and under. As the city’s premier resource for early learners, their caregivers, and their educators, we cultivate innovative thinkers capable of mastering the opportunities of tomorrow. Featuring more than 100,000 square feet of interactive exhibits— both indoor and outdoor—The DoSeum promotes constructivist, inquiry-based learning related to STEAM and early literacy. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Protective Services Safety Officer helps create a safe, welcoming environment where children and families can learn, explore, and play.
Reporting to the Protective Services Manager, this highly visible role combines safety, emergency preparedness, guest service, and de-escalation. The Protective Service Safety Officer regularly interacts with guests, staff, and volunteers while monitoring The DoSeum environment, responding to incidents, and helping prevent safety concerns before they escalate.
This is a great opportunity for someone interested in beginning or growing a career in safety, security, or emergency preparedness. The DoSeum provides training and hands-on experience to help the right candidate build their skills in a unique, family centered environment.
We are looking for someone who brings sound judgment, dependability, strong communication skills, situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Previous professional safety or security experience is not required; we value candidates who are eager to learn and committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment. The DoSeum will provide training in museum-specific safety procedures and required emergency response protocols.
This role is primarily a daytime position; however, flexibility is required to work evenings for events and rentals, occasional overnight shifts as needed. Weekend availability (Saturday amp; Sunday) is required for this position.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
SAFETY amp; EMERGENCY RESPONSE
  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence through The DoSeum’s indoor and outdoor spaces to help promote the safety of guests, staff, volunteers, and property.
  • Patrol museum facilities and grounds to identify and report potential safety or security concerns.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to incidents and emergencies in accordance with The DoSeum’s Emergancy Action Plan, including situations involving first aid, fire, severe weather, power outages, lost or separated children, suspicious activity, security concerns, and other emergencies.
  • Support established procedures for emergency evacuation, emergency egress, and incident response.
  • Assist the Protective Services Manager with routine inspections of AEDs, CPR, First Aid, emergency response, and other safety procedures.
  • Complete required FEMA coursework within the established training period following hire.
GUEST amp; STAFF SUPPORT
  • Provide a friendly, professional and approachable presence for guests, staff, and volunteers.
  • Respond to guest concerns with patience, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Use mindful de-escalation techniques and The DoSeum’s LAST service recovery model when addressing challenging or emotionally charged situations.
  • Support a family and child centered environment focused on safety, courtesy, quality, inclusion, and positive guest experiences.
  • Assist staff and volunteers during safety incidents and emergency situations.
  • Learn and utilize The DoSeum’s shared language and practices that promote inclusion and belonging
PREPAREDNESS amp; DOCUMENTATION
  • Accurately document incident, safety concerns, and response using The DoSeum’s electronic and manual incident reporting systems.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness activites and staff training as directed by the Protective Services Manager.
  • Maintain awareness of emergency equipment, evacuation routes, safety procedures, and security systems throughout the property.
  • Communicate safety concerns promptly and appropriately to Protective Services leadership and other museum leaders as needed.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrate a positive, professional, and collaborative approach when working with guests and colleagues.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Work collaboratively as part of the Protective Services team and across museum departments.
  • Participate in required organizational and departmental training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on organization.
MINIMUM QALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and solution-focused during stressful or challenging situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with children, families, staff, volunteers, and members of the public.
  • Strong observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow established safety procedures and respond appropriately to direction during emergency situations.
  • Ability and willingness to learn safety, security, emergency response, and incident reporting procedures.
  • Ability to accurately document incidents and communicate information verbvally and in writing.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays based on operational needs.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
  • The following experience is helpful but not required. Training will be provided where appropriate.
  • Previous experience in safety, security, hospitality, attractions museums, schools, recreation, events, customer service, or another public-facing environment.
  • Previous experience working with children and families in a professional, educational, recreation or community setting.
  • Experience responding to emergencies or challenging guest/customer situations.
  • First Aid, CPR, and /or AED certification.
  • Familiarity with CCTIV or other security monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with emergency preparedness, fire safety, or emergency egress procedures.
  • FEMA emergency management coursework or related training.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office or similar computer programs.
  • Spanish language proficiency is highly desirable but not required..
