Job description

Senior Controls Engineer  

Job Description 

Department: Engineering 

Job Status: Full-Time 

FLSA Status: Salary-Exempt          

Reports To:  Electrical Controls Engineering Manager 

AIP Level: 6          

Amount of Travel Required: 25% 

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; overtime as necessary.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This role centers around the development and implementation of control systems for a variety of industrial applications, with a primary focus on power generation packages and supporting auxiliary systems. The individual in this position will be integral to the entire lifecycle of electrical control systems, from initial conceptual design and supporting documentation (including electrical schematics, P&ID’s, software code, and functional specifications) to the final commissioning and handover of fully operational systems.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except for those that begin with the word "May.")  

  • A key stakeholder in the design, development, and implementation of control and automated systems for various industrial system applications. Including but not limited to software/hardware design, instrumentation design, DC distribution design and low/medium voltage AC distribution design. 

  • Engineering liaison for new build manufacturing of mobile power generation packages driven by gas turbines, reciprocating engines, and battery systems. 

  • Establish functional specification for external vendors to develop mobile power generation package software. 

  • Develop Bill of Materials (BOM) documentation for new mobile power generation package designs. 

  • Assist other departments with commissioning newly manufactured packages ensuring the electrical and control systems operates as per the functional specification. 

  • Develop process specifications that formalize standardized tasks to strengthen quality control practices. 

  • Create component specifications to assist the requisition of parts for new build manufacturing. 

  • Establish documentation that outlines operational criteria for Factory Acceptance Testing. 

  • Review control system developments to ensure designs meet industry standard and legislation.   

  • Assist other departments with the installation, commissioning and maintenance of mobile power generation packages, battery storage packages and their respective auxiliary systems. 

  • Perform redline/markup drawing reviews for controls that feed the documentation control process, become the approval authority for final drawing release. 

  • Evaluate new product/service offerings from suppliers to build technical proposals. 

  • Manage the development of electrical and control system operation and maintenance manuals. 

  • Perform other duties as assigned to assist with successful operations and business continuity. 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Successfully passes all applicable general pre-employment testing including but not limited to: background check, pre-employment drug screening, pre-employment fit tests, pre-employment aptitude and/or competency assessment(s). 

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required. Employment is contingent upon meeting company driving standards, including an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) in accordance with Company policy.

  • Daily in-person, predictable attendance. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE LEVEL 

  • 10-20 years of previous power generation experience. 

  • Electrical Engineering degree from an accredited institution of higher education required. 

  • Specific knowledge of power generation packages, preferably specializing in controls and/or instrumentation and electrical. 

  • Specialized knowledge of gas turbine and reciprocation engine control systems preferred (Woodward, Allen Bradley, Siemens). 

  • Able to read electrical/controls drawings. 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES 

  • Able to communicate in a technical manner around clients. 

  • Ability to work within a team concept to successfully complete assigned tasks.  

  • Ability to take instruction well and interact with other employees in a positive manner within the framework of assigned work groups. 

  • Efficient at Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). 

  • Knowledge of GE and other gas turbine related mechanical systems.

Frequently required to walk, sit, climb, bend, reach and squat/kneel. Senior Controls Engineers work primarily indoors in the office. If required to go to a worksite, the work environment includes exposure to hazardous materials and operating conditions. Given these conditions employees are required to wear company mandated personal protective equipment and must strictly adhere to safety policy. 

Work hours may include early morning, late afternoon/evening hours, and weekends in combination depending on job demands.
