Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager with a strong focus in Real Estate to lead tax compliance, planning, and advisory engagements for clients across residential, commercial, industrial, land, and specialโ€‘purpose properties. The ideal candidate will manage and oversee tax engagements from planning through delivery, supervise staff, and serve as a primary point of contact for clients, IRS, and state agencies. This role is based in Woodbury, NY, with flexibility for remote work on a caseโ€‘byโ€‘case basis.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee tax engagements from planning to delivery, including project scoping, delegation, and ensuring all tasks meet deadlines and client expectations.
Develop a deep understanding of clientsโ€™ industries and business models, with a primary focus on real estate entities such as residential, commercial, industrial, land, and specialโ€‘purpose properties.
Prepare, review, and manage staff deliverables such as federal and multiโ€‘state tax returns, extensions, tax planning calculations, and substantive work for all entity types (Cโ€‘Corp, Sโ€‘Corp, Partnerships, LLCs, multiโ€‘state entities, etc.).
Prepare and review complex tax planning projections for highโ€‘netโ€‘worth individuals and business entities, including real estate holdings, depreciation, cost segregation, state apportionment, and other specialized issues.
Manage and monitor client deliverables and due dates across multiple engagements, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely filings.
Prepare and review complex U.S. and multiโ€‘state/international income tax returns for business entities, including consolidated and nonโ€‘consolidated Cโ€‘corporations, Sโ€‘Corporations, and Partnerships.
Conduct complex tax research, prepare written memoranda outlining findings and conclusions, and recommend practical, clientโ€‘focused solutions.
Communicate with and respond to the IRS and state taxing authorities on behalf of clients in connection with audits, inquiries, and tax notices.
Delegate projects to staff based on skill level and workload, and provide technical accounting and tax support, coaching, and guidance as needed.
Communicate directly with existing clients, colleagues, management, and IRS representatives on various tax matters, including planning meetings and compliance discussions.
Support business development activities such as meeting with prospective and existing clients, preparing fee quotes and proposals, and evaluating clientsโ€™ needs and service opportunities.
Serve as a leader in knowledge of tax software, internal processes, and workflows, and help improve systems and reporting where applicable.
Assist with onboarding, training, and ongoing development of new hires and staff, including technical tax and realโ€‘estateโ€‘specific topics.
Engage in consulting assignments and complete special projects as requested by management or clients.
Take direction from, and report to, the Partners of the tax department, providing regular updates on project status, risks, and client feedback.
Qualifications
CPA or EA (Enrolled Agent).
Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Accounting.
Minimum 7+ years of experience in public accounting, with broad exposure to individual, corporate, and partnership taxation.
Demonstrated experience serving real estate clients (residential, commercial, industrial, land, special purpose, REITs, etc.) is strongly preferred.
Strong technical proficiency in federal and multiโ€‘state income tax compliance and planning, including consolidated returns, passโ€‘through entities, and international issues where applicable.
Experience with tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess, UltraTax, Thomson Reuters, etc.) and familiarity with accounting or practice management systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly to clients and staff.
Strong project management, organizational, and timeโ€‘management skills, with the ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines effectively.
Ability to mentor, develop, and provide constructive feedback to staff.
